Worthy Oscar Winners Deserve To Be Seen And Celebrated On The Big Screen

Submitted by: Janet de Kretser

The Academy has spoken. The winners of the 96th Academy Awards, held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on 11 March, have been announced, the golden statues have been awarded and the worthy recipients have eloquently delivered their acceptance speeches. The ‘red’ carpet has been rolled away for another year – and the #OscarBuzz conversations are now focused on the winners and the ’what ifs’ of the nominees who missed out this year.

No matter who walked off with the celebrated Oscars on Sunday evening (US time), the fact is that excellence in film is the overall winner, both at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre, and on the big screen at Ster-Kinekor cinemas. With some of the Oscar winners and nominated films currently showing on circuit, you can go and watch them, decide for yourself and join the conversation.

As widely predicted, the big winner on the night was... Oppenheimer. This true-life drama that follows the story of American scientist Dr J. Robert Oppenheimer and his role in the development of the atomic bomb swept the boards with seven Oscars from an incredible 13 nominations at this year’s Academy Awards ceremony.

The film was awarded in four of the top six categories, walking off with Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director (the first Oscar for celebrated filmmaker Christopher Nolan), Best Actor for first-time nominee Cillian Murphy for his outstanding portrayal of the brilliant but troubled scientist Oppenheimer, and Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr. The film also received golden statues for Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing and Best Original Score.

“Following its multiple Oscar nominations and now being a multi award-winning film, Oppenheimer has been brought back to the big screen to be seen as Christopher Nolan directed it to be seen. This outstanding film is now showing at select Ster-Kinekor cinemas,” says Lynne Wylie, chief marketing officer for Ster-Kinekor.

The other big winner on the night was Poor Things. The film walked off with four Oscars, including Best Actress for Emma Stone, who shines in this incredible tale about the fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter, a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter. The film also won Oscars for Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and Best Production Design. The film is also currently showing on the big screen at select Ster-Kinekor cinemas.

Another award-winning film on circuit is The Holdovers, with Da’Vine Joy Randolph taking home the Best Actress golden statue for her role in the drama about a cranky history teacher at a remote prep school who is forced to remain on campus over the holidays with a troubled student who has nowhere to go.

The Oscars for Best International Feature Film and Best Sound were scooped by The Zone of Interest, the dramatic film about the commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Höss, and his wife Hedwig, who strive to build a dream life for their family in a house and garden alongside the horrors unfolding within the concentration camp.

And, Ster-Kinekor is pleased to announce that the winner of this year’s Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film, The Boy and The Heron, directed by Hayao Miyazaki and Toshio Suzuki, will be released in select cinemas from 19 April. This critically acclaimed film centres around the psychological and emotional growth of a young man, Mahito Maki, and is a semi-autobiographical adventure fantasy about life, death, and creation from the mind of Miyazaki.

After losing his mother during the war, young Mahito moves to his family’s estate in the countryside. There, a series of mysterious events lead him to a secluded and ancient tower, home to a mischievous gray heron. The English version features the voices of Christian Bale, Dave Bautista, Gemma Chan, Willem Dafoe, Karen Fukuhara, Mark Hamill, Robert Pattinson and Florence Pugh.

Host for the 96th Academy Awards, Jimmy Kimmel, welcomed the nominees in the audience and congratulated them all for being there, stating that it had been a long and hard year for the movies, but it was also a great year for the movies. “Despite the fact that everything stopped, the people in this room still came up with so many excellent films and memorable performances…”.

With Oscar fever still very much in the air, Ster-Kinekor invites you to watch these award-winning films on the big screen at select cinemas countrywide and join in the #OscarBuzz conversation.
