Action Heats Up On Day Two Of The Rip Curl GromSearch Victoria Bay

It was an extravaganza of excellent surfing at Victoria Bay as the waves continued to pour down the point for day two of the Rip Curl GromSearch tournament. This competition, the series's second out of five contests, has been blessed with waves since the first siren yesterday. It looks like another great day on the forecast for tomorrow.

It was straight into the second round of the Premier U16 division, with Josh Jefferis scoring the highest score of the round for an excellent open-faced wave on which he performed several risky moves for high rewards. Others who were impressive in this division were Levi Kolnick, Cooper Smith and Loghann Tilsley.

The U14 Girls' semi-finals were loaded heats. In the first semi, Emily Jenkinson showed everyone that her two victories at the recent Rip Curl GromSearch #1 at Long Beach in Kommetjie were just the beginning. She surfed with speed and flair, banking a 7.67 (out of ten) for her first score before throwing caution to the wind and hooking into a big set wave. She performed a series of high-risk turns with speed and flow to be awarded a 9.5 from the impressed judges for a heat total of 17.17. Jasmine Venter was second, with Mikayla Jefferis and Sophia Jackson in the minor positions.

Standout surfers in the U18 Girls semi-finals included Sarah Scott, Chloe Ribbink, Louise Lepront and Anastasia Venter, while the surfers who were excelling in the U14 Boys divisions were Kai Stubbs, Nathan Tayler, Loghann Tilsley and Adam Faclier.

In the third U16 Boys Quarterfinal heat 3, Rory Dace was trailing in third place, and with just a few seconds on the clock, he picked up a good-looking but small inside wave. Luckily the wave grew as it moved down the point, allowing Dace to sneak in at second place, beating Josh Malherbe and eliminating him from the event.

In the next heat, the U16 Boys Quarterfinal heat 4, Cooper Smith found himself in a similar position, needing a final scoring wave to jump into second place. Once again, with only seconds on the clock, he lucked into a wave and managed to do a few critical turns with speed and flow to be awarded the score needed to get into second position and advance.

The event resumes tomorrow at 07:30 with the U16 Boys division. Heats and the schedule can be found on the Liveheats page.
