Nobel Peace Laureate Tawakkol Karman to Mentor Young Peacebuilders in South Africa

Cape Town , South Africa, October 10, 2023 - Mentoring PeaceBuilders South Africa NPC, an affiliate of the PeaceJam Foundation³, is proud to announce its 7th Annual PeaceJam South Africa Youth Leadership Conference with the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize Winner Tawakkol Karman¹.

The conference will take place on October 13-15, 2023 with a Power of Peace Dialogue at 18:00 pm on 13th October 2023 at the Old Granary Building, Buitenkant Street, Cape Town University.

During the Peace Dialogue we will dig into the true Power of Peace and the role peace plays within our communities, nations and globally. The dialogue session will be in the format of a panel discussion. The panellists include, 2011 Nobel Peace winner, Tawakkol Karman, Lauren Coffaro, Janet Jobson, Tarisai Mchuchu-Mac Millan, and Talethia Edwards.

We are honoured to have a great panel as well as our international guest,  the 2011 Nobel Peace prize winner from Yemen, Tawakkol Karman.

Tawakkol Karman is a Yemeni journalist, human rights activist and leader of the peaceful revolution that toppled the dictatorship in her country. She is the first Arab woman and the second Muslim woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. She is also the youngest Nobel Peace Laureate at the age of 32. She is known as the "Mother of the Revolution" and the "Iron Woman" for her courage and persistence in fighting for democracy, freedom and human rights⁴.

The conference from 14 – 15 October 2024 is open to all young people aged 14-25 who are interested in becoming agents of positive change in their communities and the world. The registration fee is R250 per person, which includes meals, materials and a certificate of participation. Registration for the 2023 event is now closed. We will be hosting 400 learners from 19 different high schools and various youth organisations alongside 50 + University mentors.

Mentoring PeaceBuilders South Africa NPC is a non-profit organisation that aims to create a culture of peace by empowering young people to become leaders and peacemakers. It is part of the PeaceJam Foundation, a global movement of 14 Nobel Peace Laureates who mentor youth to change the world through service and education³. Since its inception in 1996, PeaceJam has reached over 1.2 million young people in more than 40 countries³.
