Fidelity ADT Thwarts Brazen Break-In Attempt in Klevehill Park

On 2 November at around midday Fidelity ADT successfully apprehended suspects involved in a break-in at Klevehill Park.

The incident once again highlights the increasing audacity of criminals as we approach the end of the year.

The incident occurred when an alarm was triggered at a residence. Fidelity ADT Reaction officer Ndatjana, responded within minutes. Upon arrival, he encountered a suspicious individual outside the gate who attempted to deter him with aggressive language.

Undeterred, Reaction Officer Ndatjana noticed the suspect’s suspicious behaviour and took immediate action. The suspect attempted to flee in a white Fiat parked nearby, officer Ndatjana shot at the suspect. The suspect lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a residence on Astor Road. The suspects attempted to escape by jumping over the wall.

Fidelity ADT Community Operation Manager Pheko, arrived on the scene and successfully apprehended one of the suspects attempting to blend in with construction workers at a nearby site. The suspect was arrested without incident.
The homeowner was alerted by Fidelity ADT’s control room and was able to monitor the situation via her home security cameras. She confirmed that several items including 3 cell phones (were stolen. However, other items such as a TV screen, safe, and computer screen were recovered.

Charnel Hattingh, Group Head of Marketing & Communications at Fidelity ADT, praised the officers’ swift response and urged residents to remain vigilant during this time of year when criminal activity tends to increase. “Our officers’ quick thinking and bravery undoubtedly prevented a more serious incident,” Hattingh said.

Two suspects remain at large and are being sought by authorities. The vehicle used in the attempted break-in was confirmed to be stolen from Fourways.

Fidelity ADT continues to work tirelessly to ensure the safety of residents and their property. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining vigilance and having robust security measures in place.

Fidelity ADT offers these home security tips for residents:

  • Ensure that perimeter doors are fitted with adequate locks. The front door should have a safety chain or safety latch and, if the door has no vision panel, a door viewer. If keys to perimeter doors are mislaid, those locks should be replaced.
  • Fit suitable “spacers”, locks, or bolts to all sliding doors to prevent them from being lifted off their tracks (the most common method burglars use on sliding doors and windows).
  • Ensure all windows are fitted with adequate locks or burglar bars that cover all glass.
  • Ensure that all duplicate keys are locked away if not in use. Do not leave indoors or make unnecessary copies.
  • Install a safe for weapons and valuables. Duplicate house keys could be kept in this safe. Wall safes are usually not fireproof and therefore not suitable for face-value documents and money.
  • Keep the garage and tool shed locked when not in use. Would–be intruders should not have access to any item that can be used as a weapon or burglary tool.
  • Install outside lights that can be remotely controlled from inside the house. Consider installing lighting outside which is activated by a motion detector.
  • Reduce all heavy foliage near your perimeter wall and gate to reduce the possibility of those spots being used as hiding places.

When at home:

  • Always lock perimeter doors and close windows that are far away from where the family activity is centred.
  • Arm your alarm, even when you are at home, and make sure you have a panic button on your person
  • At night always lock perimeter doors and securely fasten windows. When retiring to bed, lock the inter-leading doors of those rooms that are not occupied.
  • Do not leave curtains open at night as this allows observation into the house.
  • Do not go outside alone to investigate at night. Rather switch off all lights and open curtains to allow you to see what is occurring outside, once your eyes have become accustomed to the dark.
  • Do not open any perimeter door without satisfactory identification from the visitor. If in any doubt, do not open the door and consider calling the police or Fidelity ADT.
  • Never admit to a stranger that you are alone.
  • If a repair person is expected, do not allow entry unless identity has been checked. If in doubt contact the company concerned.
  • If you note suspicious vehicles, individuals, or groups in your neighbourhood, contact the police or ADT.
