Bored with the ordinary? Let a little magic into your life at the annual Cape Junior Magic Championships at the Homecoming Centre (former Fugard Theatre) in the Mother City on 8 October 2022.

Eleven talented young magicians from across the province have been selected to compete for the ultimate Junior Magician titles in close-up and stage magic. The contest, also known as the battle of the wands, is a highlight in the calendar of the College of Magic.

This in-person event promises to be bigger and better than in recent years. The audience can expect to be wowed by card magic, sleight of hand, mentalism, illusions and a diverse range of amazing feats that require skill to perform.

“Having trained at the College under seasoned magicians in close-up and stage magic, the young magicians will perform their own unique style of entertainment,” said David Gore, College director and founder. “To enrich their routines, they may incorporate their skills in juggling, drama, mime and clowning.”

Magician mentors

Leading up to the champs, the young magicians also have access to mentorship sessions with local and international magicians.

“This exciting learning experience encourages the contestants to push their boundaries and maximise their performance potential. As a result, the standard of the contest is exceptionally high and yet it still exceeds our expectations every year,” says Gore.

Guest performers who will also dazzle and entertain the audience are professional magician Liam Joubert and two-times Cape Junior Magic Champion in close-up, Sahil Samlal. The effervescent Sinethemba Bawuti will be the MC at the close-up event.

For a full afternoon of magic, the exciting Street Magic Contest will take place in the foyer between the close up and stage magic Championship events. This gives up and coming young magicians the opportunity to interact with the public and showcase their skills.

Past experiences

Past College student, and now College board member and award-winning comedian, Stuart Taylor likens the contest to “the Rugby Sevens for the artsy kids. You compete in a very friendly way with your friends, and there is great camaraderie backstage.”

Another College alumni and professional magician Olwethu Dyantyi says the champs is “the perfect platform to check your capabilities. I enjoy magic competitions as they’re the best experience.”

The event is suitable for the whole family. For the first time, it will be held in two different venues. The close-up championship will be staged in the Avalon Auditorium at 16h00, while the stage magic championship will take place in the Star Theatre at 19h00 within the Homecoming Centre venue.
