Selaelo Selota’s ‘One Country Concert’ to play at DITSONG: Pioneer Museum in Silverton

The outdoor concert, featuring guest performances from well-known local artists, aims to inspire a sense of unity amongst South Africans.

Pretoria, South Africa – 05 September 2022 – On 10 September 2022, the DITSONG: Pioneer Museum in Silverton is proud to be hosting Selaelo Selota’s inaugural One Country Concert. The concert will be an afternoon of live music in the outdoors, featuring guest performances by Howie Combrink (singer-songwriter and music producer) and the award-winning Afro-Soul musician and songwriter Ami Faku. In addition to the performances, concert goers will also be able to tour the historical grounds and enjoy local food stalls.

The One Country Concert is inspired by Selota’s song ‘One Country’, which appeared on his latest album, ‘8 Colours of the Rainbow’. The song – and concert – are designed to inspire a spirit of social cohesion in South Africa. Both aim to share a vision of one country through song, encouraging South Africans to unite regardless of their background, race, status or political affiliation.

The concert is to be hosted at DITSONG – a national heritage institution – an ideal venue, and the DITSONG team is excited to collaborate with Selota in bringing the show to life.

“DITSONG is committed to education, empowerment through knowledge building, and social cohesion – ultimately contributing to more capable and productive communities,” says Lemohang Zincume, Marketing Manager at DITSONG: Museums of South Africa. “There’s a natural synergy between the museum’s ambitions and Selaelo’s concert vision. Both aim to promote social cohesion and a sense of shared national identity. We hope that the music, combined with the setting, will inspire and uplift South Africans at a time when social cohesion levels are low.”

The Pioneer Museum in Silverton is part of DITSONG: Museums of South Africa, a family of eight museums across Tshwane and Johannesburg. Together, the museums have a diverse collection of heritage assets spanning fauna and flora, palaeontology, military history, cultural history, geology, anthropology and archaeology. At the Pioneer Museum, visitors get a glimpse into pioneer life, including a visit to an 1848 farm and wagon house that still stand today.

The One Country Concert won’t be the first event hosted by the Pioneer Museum, which can host up to 1,500 attendees in its gardens. In the past, it’s been home to a series of jazz concerts, featuring legends including Dr Vusi Mahlasela, Amanda Black, Don Laka and Sol Shibambu. Other museums in the DITSONG family also regularly host events, including upcoming public lecture on African spirituality, a lecture on gender-based violence, and a national vintage tractor and engine show at Willem Prinsloo Agricultural Museum.

“Our goal with the museums is to support a connection between living cultural heritage, intangible heritage, and heritage through culture and art. In addition to the One Country Concert, we have an active programme of events that we encourage children, youth, adults, students, tourists and researchers to attend,” adds Annabelle Lebethe, CEO of DITSONG: Museums of South Africa.

Tickets for the One Country Concert are currently on sale at TicketPro for R200 each and will also be available at the gate on the day for R250. Attendees can also purchase a cooler box of refreshments to enjoy in the sunshine for R50. Gates for the show will open at 13:00.
