ITHUBA Housing Project: Fostering Joy, Independence, and Dignity

ITHUBA, the proud operator of the National Lottery embarked on the inaugural leg of a nationwide journey in a heartwarming initiative that began in Gauteng in December 2023, then extended through to the Free State and Eastern Cape. Infusing the holiday season with joy, they brought forth a spirit of generosity, gifting new homes to deserving beneficiaries well before Christmas. This undertaking marked the inception of a transformative project aimed at brightening lives and creating lasting impact across South Africa.

Fostering joy, independence, and dignity remains at the core of ITHUBA's commitment to changing lives.  In 2024, ITHUBA remains dedicated to its mission of giving back to the community by providing more deserving families with houses they can proudly call home. This initiative is a testament to our commitment to making a real difference in the lives of those we reach.

Since 2015, ITHUBA, South Africa's flagship National Lottery Operator, has been deeply committed to embodying the principles of Ubuntu, actively contributing to the social and economic growth of the country. Our efforts extend beyond lottery operations, as we continuously engage in localised projects, reinforcing our dedication to driving meaningful change and nurturing community development.

This year, individuals like the Hlongwane family from KwaZulu-Natal have become beneficiaries of ITHUBA's collaboration with DPSA (Disabled People South Africa). In rural Nqutu, 55-year-old Nombula Hlongwane, who tragically lost four of her five children and her husband, was identified as a recipient. Facing destitute living conditions, she has now been presented with the keys to a new home, thoughtfully designed to cater to the specific needs of the Nombula family.

In the North West region of Wolmaransstad, an inspiring 86-year-old matriarch named Ouma Jantjies graces the community. Despite battling with partial blindness, she stands as an unwavering pillar of support for her children, one of whom is disabled. Collaborating with DPSA, ITHUBA identified Kobakoba Anna Jantjies as a beneficiary for their housing project. Anna recently received keys to her uniquely tailored home, addressing both her specific vision impairment and her disabled son's needs. This home goes beyond being a mere shelter for Anna, it serves as a sanctuary, warmly welcomed with tears of gratitude. Anna sees the keys not just as ownership but as a profound restoration of dignity, as a Christian believer it is a tangible manifestation of a higher power's grace, proving that blessings unfold in his perfect time, bringing joy and renewal.

In Limpopo, the ITHUBA housing project team hands over house keys to a 12-year-old boy born blind, who faced challenges following the tragic loss of his mother in 2020. Due to his minor status, his identity remains confidential. A caring neighbour intervened, providing support and facilitating his enrollment at Siloe School for the Blind. He moves into a meticulously designed house with his guardian, catering to his needs and promoting easy mobility.

As the year unfolds, ITHUBA encourages all South Africans to pay it forward in any way possible. CEO Charmaine Mabuza emphasises the power of individual impact, urging fellow citizens to identify causes close to their hearts and engage with local initiatives or established organisations. Reflecting on the ongoing success of the housing project focused on transforming differently-abled individuals, ITHUBA remains committed. Guided by the ethos of Ubuntu, they will continue giving back to additional beneficiaries, with a mission to create a lasting impact in communities.
