Hyde Park Corner is Rocking October!

Hyde Park Corner is a cornucopia of new stores this October – from fantastical flowers to a spectacular local design collective! And did we mention the exciting new movie releases and the children’s charity drive which is in full swing now?

A new addition to the Hyde Park offering, Botanicus, showcases nature’s awakening by bringing a burst of flowery colour to brighten up your home. Under the creative guidance of Flowersmith extraordinaire, Johannes van Greunen’s intention is to extend his current offering by opening what he refers to as a ‘gifting destination with flowers as the focus’. Since 2017 Johannes has been an experiential creator as a florist and now, he will expand on that with a retail experience by sourcing the blooms and gifting items you cannot! Having curated flowerscapes for the likes of Google, Moët & Chandon and Amex, Botanicus already has an impressive LBB of celebs and A-listers… but a Flowersmith never curates and tells!

Always Welcome is adesign collective where some of of South Africa’s most accomplished designers have come together to present a ‘dreamhouse’ of South African design at Hyde Park Corner. The Always Welcome co-operative was founded by leading South African designers and manufacturers, in collaboration with Garreth van Niekerk and Alan Hayward from creative consultancy, Coraltree Projects. Always Welcome has taken a bold new step in opening a showroom space (located in the upper mall opposite Tasha’s) where various furniture makers, weavers, ceramicists, and photographers will display their work as a collective in spaces designed to emulate living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms and the like. Keep an eye out for work by designers including Mash T, The Urbanative, Joe Paine and more! For the first two weeks of October, Always Welcome will also present a selection of conceptual furniture pieces in the centre court such as Houtlander’s unique Preservation Bench, as well as new pieces by Dokter and Misses, and the first look at a new collection of works created in collaboration between artists Trevor Stuurman and Esther Mahlangu.

Speaking of an abundance of creativity, an ever-changing mix of artisans can be found in the KAMERS/Makers space – this month’s new Makers include: Budding Bead Creations, Di’Vin Design, ShweShwe Poppis, Trip Clothing, Fabiana Hoy, Just Jump, Africa Made Only, Man + Wife, Heart & Heritage, Akuko, Iliso Beaded Products, Athena A, BMC Fine Jewellery and Rush Activewear. You really are spoiled for choice!

All the big screen action can be seen at Nu Metro. From Friday, 9 October, The Secret Garden, a fantasy family drama based on the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett will enthral young and old.

And if you like a little more adrenalin with your big screen action, The Doorman starring Ruby Rose will deliver the thrill you are looking for. Make your bookings online – see you at the movies!

Don’t forget to pick up, fill and return your Santa Shoebox at Concierge Desk in Hyde Park Corner! This year South Africa’s beloved children’s charity will announce the millionth pledge, millionth Shoebox dropped off and millionth child to receive their Shoebox! Will YOU be the millionth Santa Shoebox Donor? Lists of children’s names can be found the Santa Shoebox Project website. Boxes can be collected until 31 October for filling, while drop off of filled boxes can be made until 7 November. The required contents of a Santa Shoebox have been chosen with the underprivileged child in mind and include essentials such as a toothbrush and toothpaste, a facecloth and cake of soap as well as school supplies, one outfit of clothing, some sweet treats and a toy. All items must be new, unused, and age-appropriate but extra items are most welcome as long as they all fit into a medium-sized adult shoebox. And for an added spoil, extra items can be included for example a reusable shopping bag in which the child can carry their Shoebox home. For detailed information about how to pledge and how to volunteer, please visit the Santa Shoebox Project website.

Mandy Wiener’s fifth book will be launched at Exclusive Books on 21 October. As one of South Africa’s best-known, most-credible journalists / authors and a multi-award-winning reporter, her new book, The Whistleblowers, follows on from Ministry of Crime: An Underworld Explored (published 2018) and shares the raw and evocative accounts of South Africa’s whistleblowers, told in their own voices and from their own perspectives. Don’t miss this book signing which takes place in the Centre Court at 18h00 for 18h30 on 21 October.

PS… And just to make life a little sweeter, Paul’s Homemade Ice-cream is opening their doors again this month too!
