Doritos® and Comic Con Africa announce the Doritos® Crunch Cup, a series of free-to-play tournaments, at Comic Con Africa 2022

Submitted by: Martin Headger

Doritos® and Comic Con Africa have just announced the Doritos® Crunch Cup, a series of free-to-play tournaments that will take place at the Doritos Crunch Zone at Comic Con Africa 2022. This follows the success of the Doritos® Crunch Cup Fortnite series of online tournaments that took place earlier in 2022, and is part of Doritos’ ongoing commitment to the South African gaming scene.

Each day at Comic Con Africa 2022 will see a different gaming title getting the spotlight at the Doritos Crunch Zone:

Thursday 22 September 2022 – FortniteFriday 23 September 2022 – Tekken 7Saturday 24 September 2022 – Street Fighter VSunday 25 September 2022 – FIFA22

Entry into all tournaments is free and is open to all skill levels. There is a R4 000 cash prize up for grabs each day. All tournaments will be 1v1, played on PlayStation 4 consoles, and will be single elimination format.

Registration for each tournament will take place at the Doritos Crunch Zone (located in the Gaming Hall) at Comic Con Africa from 09:00am each day and only the first 96 people will secure their spot to compete in each tournament – so arrive early to avoid disappointment! No one under the age of 13 will be permitted to compete. Should anyone between the ages of 13-18 wish to compete, a guardian or parent will need to be present at the time of registration and check-in to sign a consent form.

The first game for each tournament will kick off at 10:45am sharp. Spectators and fans can expect bold and fiery plays and thrilling moments throughout the tournaments.

Between 12:45-13:45 each day there will also be a pro showdown at the Doritos Crunch Zone where gamers and fans will get the chance to “Beat the Pro” by going up against pros of various levels across the various titles – plus could score an epic R1 000 and bragging rights. These are the pros you can expect to go up against on each day:

Comic Con Africa’s show director, Carla Massmann, says “After the success of the Doritos  Crunch Cup online Tournament earlier this year, we are super excited to be partnering with Doritos once again, but this time bringing it IRL to this year’s festival.”

“The best part is that this will be open to all with something for every gamer, from casual to avid, which really adds to the gaming offering for the show, giving an opportunity for all gamers to show off their skills while having fun!” Massmann added.

Doritos is the number 1 Coolest Snack brand in South Africa, the title remarkably held over the past decade as voted by the Sunday Times Gen Next Awards, with consumers including gamers highlighting the relevance that the brand has, through its crunchy and intensely flavoured corn chips.

Says Ntumi Kondile, Doritos Brand Manager, “We are thrilled to be able to partner with such a forward thinking event platform like Comic Con Africa. The alignment is a great fit for us as the Doritos Crunch Cup has emerged itself into the competitive gaming community in a positive way. Doritos exists to ignite bold self expression and we hope that gamers will bring their boldest selves to compete at the Crunch Cup tournament throughout the four days.”
