Samsung Galaxy S6 – Taking Technology to the Next Level Overcoming challenges to provide the ultimate mobile solution   JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – 11 June, 2015 – With the Galaxy S6 range, Samsung is using new manufacturing processes to offer immaculate design and top-of-the-line usability and functionality to produce first-of-its-kind technology. Battery life, lengthy and inconvenient charging times, camera boot time, speed and performance are often inhibitors to seamless user interaction – and now Samsung has unveiled a smartphone that is capable of overcoming these challenges.   "From a very early stage, the Galaxy S6 product designers got together with the user experience design team to really focus on refining and streamlining the customer experience," commented Craige Fleischer, Director of Integrated Mobility at Samsung Electronics South Africa. “We took a step back and really listened to what our customers were saying and that is exactly what the Galaxy S6 was based on.”

Form meets function with metal and glass

One of the biggest bugbears for smartphone owners is screen damage, but with a screen crafted from Corning® Gorilla® Glass 4, the Galaxy S6 has improved damage resistance for everyday wear and tear. The glass undergoes a chemical strengthening process whereby it is heated to 400°C to induce ion-exchange, where a state of compression is created by large ions being crammed into the glass surface1. The process not only creates a toughened casing for the smartphone, but also delivers outstanding optical clarity and a light-reflective shimmer to the device. Taking technology one step further with the Galaxy S6 edge, a 3D thermoforming technique is used to create the 2.5D contoured sides providing an immersive and almost three-dimensional experience for the user.   With its aircraft-grade 6013 aluminium alloy frame, the Galaxy S6 is not only light, but also 1.5 times stronger and 1.2 times more scratch-resistant than the 6063 aluminium, used in many competitor smartphones. The smooth structure of these striking devices requires 20 precise and delicate steps in a procedure that helps to provide enhanced texture and durability.

Super AMOLED display

Samsung understand it’s not just about size, and the Galaxy S6’s Super AMOLED screen is not only exceptional at 5.1 inches, but also has one of the sharpest displays on the market with 1440x2560 pixels at a PPI of 577. The Quad HD resolution optimises images and videos making them crisp and clear; whites are bright, blacks are deep and rich colours are enhanced. An amazing viewing experience is delivered even in bright sunlight with a luminance range from 2 cd/㎡ to 600 cd/㎡.

Wireless excellence, charging efficiency

With wireless charging set to take off exponentially in the next few years2, Samsung have managed something no other manufacturer has – built-in wireless charge capabilities. The Samsung design team had a challenge on their hands – how to create a smartphone which allowed inductive charging without compromising any of the exterior beauty? The answer was to produce a glass rear case rather than metal, therefore allowing inductive charging without the need for additional cases. The Galaxy S6 supports both standards of wireless charging – PMA (Power Matters Alliance) and WPC (Wireless Power Consortium) – to ensure compatibility across all platforms. With more and more wireless charging points popping up in cafes and coffee shops, this is a valuable advantage for Galaxy S6 owners who want to charge on-the-go.   Users also benefit from new Adaptive Fast Charge technology when the smartphone is plugged into a charger, delivering up to four hours of normal use from a single 10 minute charge. Fast charging works with the Samsung charger which has an output of 9V, 1.7A + 5V, 2A giving the device power at a much faster rate than the typical 5V, 2A charger. The Galaxy S6 can charge completely in 80 minutes*, 33% faster than previous models, using the plug-in charger.

Never miss a moment

The Samsung design team overcame yet another obstacle with the camera – to help users take great photos, every time. With a launch time of just 0.7 seconds*, the Samsung Galaxy S6 camera allows users to instantly capture even the unexpected precious moments. The 16MP rear camera shoots with real-time HDR with a F1.9 aperture and significant improvements in speed, quality and colour. With an aperture of F1.9, the Galaxy S6 camera allows a greater amount of light to enter the lens, meaning the pixel sensors can extract more information from the image and create less image distortion and better photo quality. You don’t need to be a professional to take professional-looking photos; with Optical Image Stabilisation steadying the shot and the HDR functionality instantly applying filters, users are delivered the best picture possible

Speed is of the essence

Samsung’s design team has taken technology to a whole new level with the desktop-quality, 64-bit, octa-core processor complete with the world’s first 14 nm FinFET semiconductor in the smartphone market. Redefining what it means to be blisteringly fast, this processor ensures maximum power efficiency and performance capability.   The speed and capability of the Exynos processor improves energy efficiency, thereby enhancing battery performance. Apps and features can be accessed significantly faster and users can switch between operations without lengthy load times or pauses. The Exynos chipset clocks up to 2.1GHz from the Quad-core ARM A57 and 1.5GHz from the supporting ARM A53 processer. The Galaxy S6 also boasts an ultra-fast GPU with the ARM Mali-T760 MP8 and superior performance is guaranteed with a LPDDR4 RAM and 2.0 flash memory.   "We have really focused on rationalising the consumer experience with the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, with features such as wireless charging, supercharging, advance camera functionality and enhanced security,” continues Fleischer. “The Galaxy S6 and S6 edge mark the start of an exciting new chapter for Samsung.”
