The ASUS GL752

Submitted by: Mari

Die-hard PC gamers might take a while to adapt to the new era of ‘gaming on the go’ with many gaming notebooks sometimes surpassing the capabilities of desktops. The ASUS GL752VW notebook has emerged and is sure to impress the best of the best.

This monster boasts an Intel® Core™ i7-6700HQ, 2.6 GHz Processor, perfect for running many top-of-the-line games. Inside the belly of this monster notebook, there lies a NVIDIA GeForce GTX960M (N16P-GX) graphics card which provides only the best when it comes to running games as smoothly as possible.

A local gamer, Bernard Schoeman, was asked to test the capabilities of the GL572VW and report back about his findings. He has played for leagues that include the HpX A.N.G.E.L.S on Battlefield 3 in the DoGaming League now known as the digital gaming league. He also Played League of Legends for Inmates.   The Q&A with Bernard follows: What games did you load and play on the laptop? The Division, Dota 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Neverwinter.   Per game, what is your feedback? Dota 2 - As Dota 2 requires very little specs, it ran perfectly. With the size of the screen and functionality of the keyboard I could have just as well have been playing on my own desktop.

Counter-Strike Global Offensive – The game ran very smoothly and I was surprised with how easy it was to adapt to a shooter game with the laptop’s keyboard. It did not feel awkward to play a fast paced shooter game as I have felt with other first-person-shooter games. This game’s specs aren’t as high, so it ran smoothly.

Neverwinter - Being a massive multi-player RPG, a lot of processing is needed to run the game and the details it contains. Even though this is not a very recent game and it does not contain the amazing quality like that of Division, it ran it smoothly with no delay.

The Division – Ok, now I was a bit apprehensive on playing this on the laptop at first but with the quality of the laptop it was amazing. Being a new game, at the start I could only get the smoothest game play and frames per second that we gamers require for those intense battles on lower graphics settings. With some new graphics card drivers it immediately allowed me to optimize it to higher graphics on medium. Being able to take the laptop with me and play anywhere I went or had time was so amazing.

Now, you might think ‘wow’ it can only handle low to medium graphics, let me as a veteran gamer tell you that game and graphics driver optimisation can make drastic changes in game quality in one update. The last point is that the specs for this game quite insane for its minimum and my own desktop had to be upgraded to run it smoothly.   Software wise, how did the laptop perform? I had no software problems and was pleasantly surprised with the benchmark programs used. The features to optimise each game type were nice although I thought it would not do much or change anything at all at first.

Hardware wise, how did the laptop perform? As I stated with each game and its type, it was amazing and I was impressed. It was surprising how comfortable it was to spend long hours on and the quality if it, from the screen to the keyboard.

Would you recommend this laptop for gamers? It is ideal for current gamers if they want a mobile gaming machine. I would be careful to check future game specs to see how it would fair in future.   Please state the reason for your answer above? In a price comparison a desktop would still offer more quality for gaming, but if mobility is important then a laptop would be best seeing as all high end desktop gaming machines tend to be big in size.

What about the laptop stood out for you as a gamer? The size of the screen was definitely a bonus, along with the backlit keys that could be set brighter. I also enjoyed how well it performed as to what I was expecting. We gamers tend to be very critical on laptops for gaming purposes.

What were some of the negatives about the laptop and why? My only drawback with the laptop is the same I have with any laptop or gaming laptop. Little can be upgraded and the price of the laptop compared to gaming desktops is high for what you receive and mobility is not generally my first priority, but I will say I tend to spend more on a desktop over time because I can keep upgrading.
