When the festive season is anything but merry

The festive break is generally a happy time for most, where spending time with loved ones, going on holiday, resting, and celebrating with friends and family is to be expected. However, there are many South Africans who have a very different experience during this time, and find the holiday season fills them with stress, anxiety and for many, loneliness.

This sentiment, along with the financial strain that many South Africans are facing with the highest unemployment, inflation, and interest rates in recent memory adding to the stress of daily life, means the festive season may not be as joyous as it should be for everyone.

Allan Sweidan, co-CEO and co-founder of Panda says: “More people than we might expect will be struggling during the holidays, especially with South Africa having some of the worst mental health measures in the world. The holiday blues are real and can be linked to anxiety, situational sadness, fatigue, irritability, and even stress, despite it being meant to be a time of rest.”

Many people have the means and ability to seek support if they’re struggling with their mental health, but for thousands of South Africans who don’t know who to turn to or where to begin, this time of year can be very dark and scary.

For this reason, mental health app Panda, has developed a programme of free online sessions, specifically for those who struggle through the festive season.

“The sessions, presented by experienced counsellors and professionals, provide hands on, practical advice, steps, and methods to help those needing support to manage and cope with this time of year. The most important thing to remember is that you are not alone if you’re feeling this way, and help is available when you need it,” he adds.

In addition to the sessions, users can also book appointments with trained counsellors and psychologists if they prefer one-one support.

The Panda app, launched in 2021 out of the severe lack of mental health support for most South Africans, provides a safe environment for those seeking mental health support to effectively deal with an array of conditions, from depression and anxiety to everyday stress.
