The DA’s fight against drug and substance abuse continues in Johannesburg metro
Submitted by: MyPressportal TeamI call upon the Gauteng Premier, David Makhura, and the Gauteng Social Development MEC, Nandi Manyathula-Khoza, to support the City of Johannesburg in combating drug abuse.
In January 2018, the City of Johannesburg completed a R39 million renovation to the City’s drug rehab centre, Golden Harvest Park, in North Riding. Golden Harvest is now able to accommodate 24 boys and 22 girls between the ages of 12 and 17 years, where it could only accommodate a fraction before. All 23 new guestrooms are more spacious and better equipped to treat those who go through the doors of the centre.
Aside from the investment into rehabilitation centers, the City of Johannesburg raided a number of drug dens in the inner city last year and many drug lords were put behind bars as a result. This proves the failure of the previous ANC-led administrations to prevent drug abuse as drug syndicates took hold under their watch.
It will take a collective effort to combat this issue. It will take hard work, but the DA is committed to fighting the scourge of drug abuse that is destroying communities and depriving people of opportunities. It is time to stop drug abuse.
