What We Offer

12-Steps

Freeman House Recovery is built on the Minnesota Model which incorporates AA’s 12 step program into a holistic addiction recovery program. The 12 step program is well known as a successful approach to addiction recovery with meetings held by countless communities around the world. 12 step recovery is built on two basic premises – firstly the acknowledgement of a Higher Power greater than oneself, and secondly, that addicts recover best when helping other addicts. 12 step programs are free, but they rely on volunteer sponsors who may have limited time for the recovering addict. Freeman House Recovery is able to fast-track recovery with our inpatient 12 step treatment program as well as the hands-on guidance of professional counsellors.

At Freeman House Recovery, we are not prescriptive about religion. You will have the freedom to create your own spiritual path and relationship with your Higher Power.

The opposite of addiction is a connection, and that’s why a connection to your Higher Power is so transformative. Connection to others and belonging to a worldwide community will also facilitate recovery and healing.

Individual Therapy

Our focal counsellors offer individual therapy to each guest twice a week to help you articulate feelings, identify your defence mechanisms and achieve insight into the behaviour and the roots of your addiction or dysfunction. We draw on a variety of well-established methodologies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Psychodynamic Therapy depending on each client’s unique makeup, challenges and history.

Group Therapy

Group therapy is a key part of our drug treatment program and is built into our daily schedule. Group therapy is governed by the principles and ethics that guarantee participation, confidentiality, safety and growth. The goals of our group work include: supporting each other, fostering personal growth, developing social skills, and interpersonal awareness, increasing self-awareness, growing accountability and understanding our internal motivations as we work through the 12 steps.

Inpatient Treatment

Within your individualised primary care inpatient treatment experience, you will experience a meticulously scheduled addiction recovery program designed to take you through a journey of self-discovery, growth and healing. We have literally thought of everything to offer you or your loved one the very best chance at successful recovery and truly align mind, body and soul.

We combine individual and group therapy, physiotherapy and acupuncture, reflexology, meditation, art therapy, drama, yoga, martial arts, cuisine, excursions and activities in our beautiful surroundings to create an island in time designed to help you return to your truest healthiest self.

Holistic Treatment

The mind-body connection is well established in medical research and our holistic treatment approach is modelled on rehabilitation best practices. Spiritual, emotional, and physical recovery can only come about with targeted interventions for every aspect of self. We include physiotherapy and acupuncture, meditation, art, yoga, martial arts, strength training and weekly excursions among our treatment bouquet as well as gardening, weekly chores and responsibilities, 12 step work and carefully selected movies.

Nature Activities

Our unique approach to recovery involves weekly excursions into the beautiful Magaliesburg mountains, Hartbeespoort Dam and Pilanesberg National Park for Big Five Safaris as we experience exciting and soulful nature-based adventures. This is called ecotherapy or nature therapy. These outings are designed to build group cohesion, nurture mindfulness and tranquillity and allow you to become attuned and deeply conscious of life’s most exquisite gifts and experiences.

Depending on supplier availability and weather, these excursions will include:

Family Support For Addicts And Alcoholics

Extended Post-Care Treatment

No man is an island unto himself and sustainable recovery will require the loving and patient support of your family. For families of people suffering from addiction and comorbid conditions, discussions about what addiction is, enmeshment, co-dependence and healthy boundaries are helpful starting points for their own wellness journey and will assist with ongoing recovery.

Our family support program involves:

Weekly meetings

Once a week you will meet with the focal counsellor to receive feedback on your loved one’s progress in recovery

Family Education and Support meetings

This group is for families of addicts and will be both supportive and educational in nature. There is so much support available for addicts, but often, their loved ones feel lost and alone. This group will offer educational workshops about concepts like co-dependency, enabling, and the like as well as a safe and supportive space to connect with other families with similar struggles.

Addictions We Treat

Alcohol Addiction

Alcohol abuse can ruin a person’s life, and yet many people continue to misuse it in order to avoid detox withdrawal, as well as the emotional pain that they have been self-medicating. Depending on the severity of your dependence, if done at home without medical supervision, alcohol withdrawal can actually be deadly, and certainly causes dopamine and GABA deficiencies it may have caused or masked. These are critical neurotransmitters required for pleasure, attention, motor coordination, cognition, and mood. Our carefully managed alcohol addiction treatment program will give you the sober living skills you need for ongoing recovery. Continuous alcohol abuse can lead to the early onset of dementia or Alzheimers as well as other serious diseases.

Drug Addiction

A drug addiction treatment programOur credentialed specialists offer a personalised drug addiction treatment program, with medical detox and intensive holistic treatment to address addiction to illicit drugs such as methamphetamines, opiates, marijuana, crack/cocaine and hallucinogens. Because of their illegal nature, addiction to these substances often coincides with traumatic experiences. We understand this and we are equipped to help.

Prescription Medication Addiction

Opioid addiction is by far the most common among addictions to pharmaceuticals and opioid overdoses claim the lives of tens of thousands each year. Benzos, sleeping pills and stimulants are also highly addictive prescription drugs liable to cause abuse. If done without medical supervision, withdrawal from some of these substances can also be deadly. What remains in common with this class of addiction is often its ‘innocent’ beginnings, with a legitimate prescription in a doctor’s office. Sufferers of acute or chronic pain, panic and anxiety or insomnia rely on these medications to alleviate their suffering unaware of the possibility of physical and psychological dependence.

Pornography And Sex Addiction

Increasingly common because of its ubiquitous availability and physiological effect on the brain, porn addiction needs a targeted and holistic response as well as an exploration of its underlying causes. It may or may not fall within sex addiction which involves the need to perform sexual acts to achieve a ‘fix’, similar to the fix craved by someone with alcohol/opiate use disorder. Sex addiction may result in unsafe behaviours, remorse, guilt or negative personal or professional consequences.

Gambling Addiction

Compulsive gambling or gambling addiction is the uncontrollable urge to continue gambling despite its ruinous effects. This is because gambling stimulates the brain’s reward system in much the same way as alcohol or drugs, leading to an addiction. If family members, friends or co-workers have expressed concern about your gambling or if you’ve depleted savings, gone into debt, resorted to fraud or theft to fund your gambling, it’s time to seek urgent help.

Gaming And Social Media

An increasing prevalent problem among young adults, gaming addiction is a relatively new phenomenon with various diagnostic criteria as outlined by the WHO. It disrupts functioning, sleep, hygiene, appetite and mood and leads to a loss of interest in anything other than the addiction, that also goes for social media addiction. Significantly, both gaming and social media impact the dopamine and serotonin receptors in the brain creating dependence, withdrawal and addiction in those susceptible. We help you manage your relationship with gaming, social media and other technologies to achieve balance.

Self Harm

Deliberate Self Harm (DSH) or Non-Suicidal Self Injury (NSSI) are behaviours like cutting, poisoning and others, used as a release or outlet for suffering, not as an attempt to take one’s life, although this may tragically be their unintentional result. DSH behaviours may also include hair pulling, biting, burning, head-butting, hitting, carving, scratching, skin picking and intentional interference with wound healing. DSH can leave permanent scars and damage to skin and tissue, but for sufferers, the physical pain acts as an outlet for painful emotions and can often have an endorphin-releasing effect. After the release however comes the shame, pain and self-loathing that begin the cycle anew, leading many to diagnose DSH as an addiction. The secrecy involved in DSH can result in it going undetected for years.

Shopping Addiction

Do you hide credit card bills, shopping bags or receipts? Do you shop to assuage your guilt about a previous spree, or to feel better about life? Are you overwhelmed by debt and financial problems but still unable to curb unnecessary spending? Is your shopping habit putting your relationships under strain? If you answered yes to any or all of these questions, you may be a shopaholic. Our holistic support-intensive rehabilitation will help you reset your brain and regain control.

Shopping addiction is a type of process addiction that refers to the compulsive and problematic purchase of items, even when the shopper cannot afford them. Shopping addicts may feel a sense of euphoria or elation when shopping, and they may continue to shop even when it causes financial problems.

Shopping addiction is often considered a form of substance abuse, as the shopper may use spending as a way to cope with difficult emotions or life problems. Shopping addiction is also sometimes referred to as oniomania, compulsive buying disorder or compulsive spending disorder.

Love Addiction

Pathological love is different from other conditions like dependence disorder or borderline personality disorder because dysfunctional behaviour is limited to romantic love. Love addiction can result from an underlying mood disorder, impulse control disorder or obsessive-compulsive personality disorder. Love addiction can present in various forms and our skilled counsellors are trained to identify if you or your loved one has a love addiction, however, some of the main diagnostic criteria are a compulsion to replace the lost love relationship immediately with another, and feeling alone and desperate when not in a relationship. Interestingly, like other addictions, love addiction is real and can show up in neuro-imaging studies showing a neurochemical component.

Mental Illness

Mental illness is a general term that covers a wide range of mental health conditions. Mental illnesses are medical conditions that often result in a diminishment of an individual’s ability to cope with the demands of life. These disorders can be associated with distress and/or problems functioning in social, work or family activities.

Mental illness is not caused by personal weakness, lack of character or bad influence. Rather, it arises from a complex interaction of social, psychological and biological factors. People who have mental health problems can get better and many recover completely.

With appropriate treatment and self-help, most people with mental illness can lead full, productive lives. Unfortunately, stigma, discrimination and exclusion are still common, making it hard for people with mental illness to get better and stay well.

Eating Disorders

Eating disorders treatment

Eating disorders are extremely dangerous mental illnesses. Even sufferers that don’t necessarily look ill can be at risk of death or serious health impacts due to the constant abuse or neglect of the body’s physical need for sustenance. Freeman House Recovery clients with eating disorders will receive a specialized eating disorders treatment and meal plan.

Burnt Out

Do you feel emotionally, physically and mentally exhausted? Is this exhaustion affecting your work and relationships? You may be suffering from burnout. Burnout may also involve feelings of cynicism, depression and lethargy and these typically happen when you lack support, can’t take breaks from your work, or are in a job that feels at odds with who you are. Burnout has physical consequences such as headaches, fatigue, heartburn, and other gastrointestinal symptoms and it may increase your risk of alcohol, drug, or food misuse. We can help bring meaning and energy back into your life with our holistic results-driven treatment program. Depending on the cause of your burnout, Freeman House recovery can help you manage stress, practice self-care and achieve the work-life balance essential for long-term wellbeing.

Personality Disorders

Your personality is the particular way of thinking, feeling and behaving that makes you different from everyone else. It develops as a result of your life experiences and your inherited characteristics. A personality disorder is a way of thinking, feeling and behaving that causes distress or problems functioning and in relationships – and is long-lasting. Diagnosis of one or more of the 10 known personality disorders is only made from age 18 and older. Psychotherapy and group therapy are the primary ways of treating these disorders, leading to the insights and behavioural changes that change patterns of dysfunction. Medications such as antidepressants, anti-anxiety medication or mood stabilizing medication may help treat some symptoms.
