Maximising the potential of teabags in celebration of World Food Day

With the rising climate crisis placing strain on existing food sources, sustainable practices must be incorporated to ensure nothing goes to waste. In celebration of World Food Day on 16 October, Laager partner dietitian, Mbali Mapholi, has shared innovative ways to get the most out of something as simple as a tea bag.

“In a world where food waste has become a global concern, every little effort counts. The impact of discarded food on our environment and communities is substantial so we must explore creative ways to combat food waste,” commented Mapholi. “World Food Day serves as a call to action, urging us to reflect on our consumption habits and find creative solutions. Repurposing teabags aligns seamlessly with this initiative, reminding us that even the smallest changes can make a significant impact.”

Mapholi explained that tea bags are often associated solely with brewing tea. However, their potential extends far beyond the teacup.

“Laager Rooibos, which is celebrated for its high-quality tea leaves, opens a world of possibilities when it comes to re-purposing for sustainability. These tea bags are not just vessels for brewing; they are tools for sustainable living! Embracing sustainability means looking for opportunities to minimise waste in all areas of our lives, and repurposing teabags is a small but impactful step toward this goal. By reimagining their use, we can contribute to a healthier planet and a more conscious lifestyle.”

Mbali’s 5 Tips for Repurposing Laager Rooibos Tea Bags

1. Composting: nourishing the garden naturally

Don't let those used tea leaves go to waste as they have a valuable role to play in enriching the garden. Composting tea leaves is a fantastic way to recycle this organic material and contribute to the health of plants. As you add tea leaves to your compost pile, they break down and release essential nutrients into the soil. This nutrient-rich compost supports plant growth, minimises the need for chemical fertilizers, and promotes a healthier, more sustainable garden ecosystem. The teabag can be cut open and emptied into your compost or directly onto the soil, or alternatively the used bags can be added as is, provided the compost heap is churned regularly.

2. Skin soothing bath: relax and rejuvenate

Drop a few used Laager Rooibos tea bags into your bath water and let their natural properties work their magic. Laager Rooibos is known for its soothing and antioxidant-rich properties, making it an excellent addition to your bath ritual. The warm Laager Rooibos-infused water can help calm skin irritations, reduce redness, and leave your skin feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

3. DIY Laager Rooibos skin scrub: nature's exfoliator

Elevate your skincare routine with a simple and eco-friendly DIY exfoliating scrub. Open the used Laager Rooibos tea bags and mix the leaves with a gentle cleanser for a refreshing and eco-friendly scrub. The natural properties of Laager Rooibos will gently exfoliate your skin, leaving it soft and revitalised.

4. Eye and injury relief: nature's soothing touch

Laager Rooibos tea bags can provide relief to tired eyes and minor injuries. After brewing a cup of rooibos tea, let the used tea bags cool in the refrigerator. Once chilled, place them over your closed eyelids for a refreshing and soothing experience. The anti-inflammatory properties of Laager Rooibos can help reduce puffiness and ease-tired eyes. Additionally, for minor bruises or swelling, consider using frozen Laager Rooibos teabags. Place them in the freezer until chilled (but not frozen solid), then gently apply them to the affected area for several minutes. Laager Rooibos' soothing properties can help reduce swelling and provide relief.

5. Keeping warm: a natural firelighter

In addition to the soothing, nutrient-enriching properties of Laager Rooibos tea bags, they can also be useful for lighting fires for warmth and cooking. Once used, the tea bags can be completely dried out, and soaked in a glass bottle containing paraffin. These home-made tea bag firelighters tend to burn longer than commercial ones, but remember to use with caution as paraffin is highly flammable.

Mapholi said these sustainable solutions were made even more beneficial considering the incredible health benefits of this cost-effective tea: “Laager Rooibos, known for its rich flavour and distinctive red colour, is also renowned for its potential health benefits. Rooibos contains antioxidants, such as quercetin and Aspalathin, which can help combat oxidative stress and support overall well-being. Incorporating Laager Rooibos into your skincare routine and daily rituals can offer a holistic approach to health and sustainability.”

Candice Sessions, Laager Marketing Manager, agreed, saying that from enriching gardens to creating self-care rituals, the uses of Laager Rooibos tea bags extend well beyond the cup: “By embracing these creative re-use options, we not only minimise waste but also celebrate the potential of everyday items to inspire change. Let's seize this opportunity to combat food waste this World Food Day and beyond, one Laager Rooibos tea bag at a time!”
