Rising Anger Over Loadshedding Sparks Fears of Increased Protests

Submitted by: Susann Deysel

As South Africa faces the ongoing challenges of loadshedding and rising electricity prices, citizens have become increasingly frustrated and discontent. This has led to fears of increased protests and civil unrest, as seen in recent incidents in Dawn Park, Klippoortjie, and Phoenix, Durban where residents have blockaded roads and burned tires to voice their dissatisfaction with the lack of electricity and the resulting impact on their livelihoods.

The economic pressure caused by loadshedding is also having a significant impact on the private sector, with companies struggling to cope with increased tariffs and additional expenses for backup power. Families are also affected, with many struggling to put food on the table due to rising costs of electricity and food.

In response to these concerns, SSC Legacy is offering its Strike Force Protection Unit to safeguard businesses from protestors. According to Howard Griffiths, Managing Director of SSC Legacy, "Riots and strike action can pose a significant danger to both staff and business properties and our specialised team is ready to respond to any situation. In addition to their physical presence, the Strike Force Protection Unit also offers a range of security services, including surveillance and intelligence gathering, to help identify potential threats before they can cause harm."

As the situation in South Africa remains uncertain, it is important for businesses and individuals to take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their property. SSC Legacy's Strike Force Protection Unit offers a reliable and effective solution to ensure the safety of businesses during times of civil unrest.

How to Stay Safe During Protests:

If you are aware of unrest near you, it is best to monitor social media and traffic updates, avoid the area at all costs, and if you find yourself in the middle of it, make sure to let the rioters know that you are not a threat to them. Try to find an escape route, seek shelter or find a police officer.

If you are in your car, stay in it as long as possible, unbuckle your seatbelt and prepare to flee if necessary. Keep your car moving while looking for escape routes, avoid honking at or taunting protesters, and do not hit any protestors with your car as the mob may turn on you. Stay aware of your surroundings and listen to police instructions. If you have to abandon your car, try to get out of the area as fast as possible and let your family know that you are safe.
