The Benefits of Permanent Residence in South Africa

Submitted by: Simon Carletti

Are you an expatriate living and working in South Africa? If so, you may be wondering about the benefits of obtaining permanent residency in the country.

As a permanent resident, you will have most of the same rights and responsibilities as a South African citizen, with the exception of being able to obtain a South African passport and vote in government elections.

Advantages To Permanent Residency

First, you will be able to apply for a South African ID card, which is necessary for various financial activities such as applying for a credit card or a loan.

Additionally, if you leave South Africa for more than three years, your permanent residency status may be revoked unless you provide a valid reason for your absence.

Permanent residency also allows you to exchange your foreign driver’s license for a South African driver’s license within 12 months of receiving your certificate.

If you are married to a permanent residency holder, you may qualify to apply for permanent residency yourself after being married for five years or longer.

Living and Working Freely in South Africa

Perhaps most importantly, permanent residency allows you to live and work in South Africa without any limitations.

This includes the right to work without restriction, engage in business, own property, study, and perform all activities a citizen is permitted to do except for voting.

Permanent residency also comes with an RSA ID number. This makes it easier to participate in administrative activities like investing in retirement annuities and applying for home loans.

Plus, your immediate family can join you in South Africa, and your spouse or partner may be able to apply for permission to work.

Regulations and Visa Processing Backlog

If you are considering applying for permanent residency in South Africa, keep in mind that regulations regarding the path to permanent residency may change.

However, obtaining permanent residency may be a smart move if you plan to stay in South Africa for the long term.

It’s also worth noting that the South African Department of Home Affairs has set a target to clear the visa backlog by June 2024.

This includes the backlog on permanent residence permit applications, which may result in faster processing times for those applying for permanent residency in the coming years.
