Investing and Trading for 2023 - Where to for South Africans?

South Africa finds itself emerging from the Global Epidemic and investors have struck a triple whammy of headwinds: A cost-of-living crisis, high inflation resulting in a 350 basis point increase in the REPO rate, and an ailing electricity supply which is hindering economic growth.

How the country navigates itself out of this storm will lie in strong economic policies, political will, and a modicum of global stability.

This leaves us asking the question: With all this uncertainty, how do we invest our money?

Inflation is sticking well above 7% and the South African Reserve Bank may find that it needs to increase rates even further. This makes where we put our money very important as we want to maximise our returns.

We can of course let institutional investors handle the money for us, which gives better returns than a savings account, but it often comes at a high price with fees and charges eating into the growth.

Taking Charge of your own Money

A growing trend has been for investors to take matters into their own hands and manage their investments themselves. Greater control does come with greater risks, but there are many things an investor can do to educate themselves.

South Africans are spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing such self-management platforms. While some are operated by local banks, others are dedicated investment sites, local and international.

Choosing the right platform can either set you up for success or burn in the long run. There are a lot of fly-by-night platforms which are unregulated and their operations are often quite opaque.

Introducing CAPEX.com

CAPEX.com is a fairly new entrant into the market, launching in South Africa in 2021. It’s a global platform available in multiple regions across the globe and licensed in all territories in which they operate. Here in South Africa they are registered with the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA). This means they are a fully regulated platform with checks and balances so that no one is going to be running off with your money.

A great feature is that they’re available via your Desktop Browser as well as via an App for both Android and Apple product

The CAPEX.com platform leaves the investor and trader spoilt for choice. It allows you to trade in Contracts-for-Difference (CFDs), Foreign Currencies (Forex Trading), Grouped Themes (ThematiX), as well as giving access to the cryptocurrency space.

Free Training for All.

If the above list excites you or leaves you a little confused and overwhelmed, don’t worry. CAPEX.com provides a world-class training programme for all members. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert trader, you will be able to learn what these various products are.

The Training Academy will not only teach you what these products are, but how to actually use these products. You’ll also learn how to use the CAPEX.com desktop platform as well as the Apps.

You’ll also have access to a Demo Account, which allows you to practice your skills without putting any of your own money at risk. Once you’re ready you can activate your live account, load funds into the account and begin your trading and investing journey.

What does it cost?

CAPEX.com believes in empowering people to take control over their own assets. This is why their Training Academy is completely free. Such comparable courses on other platforms can cost up to R15 000. This removes a massive obstacle for ordinary people to get started without requiring huge funds up front.

CAPEX.com also does not charge a monthly platform fee. This again differentiates it from other comparable platforms that can charge anything up to R500 a month simply for access to the account and the data analysis.

How does a person get started?

Getting started with CAPEX.com is as simple as going to their website and opening a free account. You’ll be asked a few basic questions to establish your skills before being given access to the main platform. And don’t worry if you have absolutely no skills - you’ll still be given an account and access to the Academy.

Once your account is opened you can add funds directly to your account via multiple payment platforms including Visa/MasterCard and SecureEFT (via OZOW). You can start with as little as US$100 (around R1700).
