Germany in Need of Foreign Workers

Germany in Need of Foreign Workers

Wanting to work overseas? Ever wanted to visit the economic hub of Europe? Quite often people overlook Germany, but with these new proposed changes, it is looking more and more realistic to make Germany your new European destination! Germany is considering making it easier for foreign skilled workers to find their way to Germany.

Germany Attempts to Tackle Lack of Skilled Workers

For several years, Germany has struggled to fill its lack of skilled workers and reached record-low levels during the first quarter of this year. To combat this, The Free Democratic Party (FDP), one of the three parties in the traffic light coalition government in Germany along with the Social Democrats (SPD) and the Greens, has suggested the introduction of a points system that would allow self-organised immigration to become much more accessible to prospective skilled immigrants.

Service Industry in Need of Help

In July of this year, a survey conducted by the Munich-based Ifo Institute found that 49.7% of companies involved were affected by this lack of skilled workers. The industry most affected by this is the service industry (accommodation and events) with 54.2% of companies noting a struggle to fill vacancies. They are followed by the manufacturing industry at 44.5%; the food manufacturing industry has struggled the most. Retail does not find itself excluded from this issue with 41.9% of companies citing a lack of staff and an inability to fill vacancies.

Your Express Entry to Germany

This model, suggested by FDP party vice chairman Johannes Vogel, would be based on the Canadian system of Express Entry. In the case of Canada, possible candidates for skilled visas fill out a Canada Skilled Immigration Points form, which creates their CRS score. The form includes 6 factors, and if a candidate scored high enough, they became eligible to create an Express Entry profile.

Vogel believes this system would aid Germany in its search for skilled workers, and references Canada’s success to justify his suggestion. In a recent interview, Vogel mentioned, “Canadian experience shows that more than 60 % of immigrants are gained via this route… That’s why we must by no means neglect the path of so-called self-organised immigration in the new set of rules.” Like Canada, Germany would award candidates positive points toward their application based on good language skills, young age, and high levels of education.

An Easier Process for You

With Faeser and Heil quoted as saying, “We want to make it easier and faster for foreign skilled workers to find their way to Germany”, and with Vogel suggesting the implementation of the point system, the future for applying as a skilled worker to Germany could become a much easier process than before for citizens of Non-EU countries.
