Learn to Live School of Skills Hosts Vibrant Mardi Gras Concert for Local Neighbourhood Old Age Home Residents

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA - February 14, 2024 - The Learn to Live School of Skills, a flagship initiative of the Salesian Institute Youth Projects, proudly hosted a spirited Mardi Gras-themed concert this week, delighting guests of honour from the Neighbourhood Old Age Homes (NOAH) in Cape Town.

The event, held at the school's premises, served as a celebration of the exceptional progress made by the Learn to Live Choir and Marimba Band, captivating the hearts of the golden oldies with their enchanting performances. Attendees were treated to a morning filled with joyous melodies and lively rhythms, showcasing the  talent and dedication of the young performers.

"The Learn to Live School of Skills is committed to providing a platform for youth from at-risk backgrounds to discover and nurture their talents," said Father Francois Dufour, CEO at the Salesian Institute Youth Projects. "We are thrilled to have had the opportunity to share the performances with the esteemed residents of NOAH, fostering intergenerational connections and spreading the joy of music."

The success of the concert can be attributed to much-needed funding received from various funders, and in this instance from the National Arts Council, which enabled the music department to continue its vital work in developing the talents of the youth attending the Learn to Live School. This support is integral to ensuring the sustainability and growth of the programme, as it addresses the significant resource requirements of a  music department.

"We are immensely grateful to the National Arts Council for their generous support, which will allow us to expand and develop our music programme and provide even greater opportunities for our learners," added Tony Austen, Principal of the School.

The Learn to Live School of Skills is a comprehensive 4-year programme designed to empower youth aged 14 to 18 from marginalized communities, offering basic education and vocational skills training aimed at fostering personal growth and socioeconomic empowerment. Alongside its sister programmes under the Salesian Institute Youth Projects umbrella, the school remains dedicated to creating a brighter future for the youth of Cape Town.
