Getting Value From A Used Car

Submitted by: Claire Young
{pp}While buying a used car is not always an easy task, and there are many considerations to take into account, it brings many advantages for you….

A used car is a cost-effective alternative to buying a new car which loses as much as 30% of its value in the first year. In today’s economic environment there are many good used-car deals available due to car owners downsizing or trying to reduce debt. Ed Gassner, CEO, AA Autobay, says that there are many advantages to buying a used car.

“There has never been a better time to buy used cars in South Africa. The booming new car sales market over the last four years has resulted in a huge used car market. This, combined with affordability pressures, has driven prices of used cars down. There are many good deals to be had, as long as you know what you are buying.”

“The best way to obtain maximum value when buying a used car is to buy privately because both buyer and seller get the best deal,” says Gassner. However, there are many risks inherent in buying a used car, from establishing its quality and reliability, to test drive safety. Consumers can still benefit from buying a used car simply by being aware of the associated risks and knowing what to look out for. “When you start looking, do your research.

Have a look at the AA Car Annual, other car buyer’s guides and classified adverts to get an idea of what you can get in your price range, taking into account the model and mileage,” says Gassner. “It is always a good idea to take someone with you who is knowledgeable about cars when you start looking. Always look at the car in daylight – and take a good look.

This may seem obvious, but the heart often overrules the head. And don’t be afraid to ask questions.” When inspecting a car, check its overall condition inside and out. Cleanliness is a good indication of how the car was looked after. Look out for a dirty engine or frosting around the battery terminals, rumbling or knocking noises when the engine is started, as well as blue smoke from the exhaust. While no car is in perfect condition and will have a few paint chips, mismatched paint or obvious over-spraying could indicate that the car has been in a major accident. Gassner advises to also check for uneven wearing of the tyres that wear and tear on the carpeting and pedals is consistent with the car’s age, and that when test driving the car does not pitch or that the engine does not overheat.

“There is no fool-proof way of buying a used car but sticking to things like checking the car’s paperwork and service record, paying for a mechanical check, negotiating for a lower price, and shopping around for the best deal, can ensure that consumers do get value for money.” AA Autobay addresses these risks by offering an online platform that unites buyers and sellers of private vehicles in a safe, hassle-free environment. All cars that are placed on the portal are subjected to an AA multi-point check, including a roa

dworthy test. Vehicles are also checked to ensure that they are not stolen or have been rebuilt following a major accident, and an AA Mechanical Breakdown Warranty is offered with every car purchased that is 8 years old and younger.

An important part of the AA Autobay service is the arrangement of safe test drives, ensuring a risk free environment for both parties. Buyers are vetted by AA Autobay and as a result, the company guarantees payment and facilitates the paperwork and handover of the vehicle, offering a smooth, seamless transaction. AA Autobay, a division of motoring experts AASA, is an online platform that unites buyers and sellers of pre-owned vehicles in a safe, hassle-free environment. The company offers additional services relating to finance, insurance, licensing and registration.
