Camp Jabulani enhances eco-friendly initiative

Submitted by: The P.R Team

Camp Jabulani, the 5-star luxury safari lodge, Hoedspruit, a proud member of the prestigious Relais & Châteaux Association, has further enhanced its eco-friendly initiatives with the implementation of a wormery and also recycling kitchen and garden waste.

The wormery, regarded to most at the Camp as their “small biosphere”, requires a balance of oxygen, moisture, food, temperature and a worm population. Even the elephants at Camp Jabulani play their part in the wormery as their dung serves as a main supply of food for the worms.

Camp Jabulani would add and use an industrial green wormery which will be kept close to the stables for all the dung collected at the stables. This will also reduce the amount of fleas in an eco-friendly way. The plans for the wormery include using the worm wee (or worm tea as it’s sometimesreferred to) in erosion areas to assist in the re growth, donating some of the wee to the Paulos Ngobeni Primary school, the Camp’s charity of choice, to assist with their vegetable garden and should a need exist, to supply to parents and the community to contribute to their own vegetable gardens. TheCamp will also use the wee in their bana grass which is grown and harvested at the Camp for the herd of elephants as extra food during the night in the stables. In the long term, the Camp would also like to start selling to established crop farmers.

Comments Adine Roode, Managing Director: “By implementing our wormery, we once again strive to lead the way in protecting our environment and at the same time benefit the community, earth, and elephants by significantly improving the appearance of crops, vegetable gardens and grounds after using our own farms’ by-products, such as worm wee and worm compost. “
