Kwena Square hosted its official VIP ceremony on the 29th of June. The day encompasses speeches by our esteemed (COO) Leon Kok as well as the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Mpho Phalatse and 120 honourable guests in attendance with the vibrant Sureshnie Rider as our emcee.

Developed at a cost of R200 million, this is a convenience centre with a difference, designed to tastefully highlight the beauty and vibrance of the area, be environmentally friendly and efficiently meet evolving shopper demands. 

Integration of the local community has been a central driver behind the construction, leasing, and provision of business opportunities for local subcontractors. Local tenants highlighting the best S.A has to offer include Benita’s Bakery, Nossa Casa, Uncle Joe Florist, Quello Deli, Sugeee Bar and Freshouse Market.

A standout feature in the build-up to the launch was a completely community-driven project to find the best local talent to develop the unique design of the benches and dustbins to accentuate the mall’s aesthetics, which were unveiled by Leon Kok (COO) and the Honourable Mayor and represented the official opening of Kwena Square. Our local bench designer Siviwe Jali from UMugqa Studio, watched as his brilliant work was revealed to the public for the first time and the crowd enjoyed a pop of excitement as the confetti was shot proudly into the air, a moment that will be engrained into all that attended this momentous celebration

With sustainability high on the agenda for Redefine, an array of rooftop solar panels will generate as much as 40% of the electricity required by the centre, a key feature which will reduce the load on the main grid. The Honourable Mayor noted “I am inspired to hear that Kwena Square has employed rooftop solar panels at Kwena Square that will generate as much as 40% of the electricity required by the centre, a key feature which will reduce the load on the main grid.”

Leon Kok, COO of Redefine Properties says the centre comes just as demand for convenience shopping rises. “The fact that our centre is so aesthetically pleasing is a major plus factor, together with its strong focus on environmental, social and governance (ESG), while offering ease of use, open ventilation, and safety. The completion of the project during the pandemic was notable and reflects our commitment and our tenants’ confidence in the project,” says Kok. Kwena Square was proud to provide the executive mayor, Cllr Mpho Phalatse with the Kwena Crocodile as a token of our appreciation which was locally in Cosmo City.

The day entailed a substantial turnout from press and media members such as Sunday Times, eNCA, Roodepoort Record and Get It Magazine just to name a few which has resulted in an estimated exposure of up to R2.6million to date.

After the exciting opening ceremony, the mall opened its gates to the public, Customers flocked to Kwena Square for the official public opening on the 30 June with not an empty parking in sight the mall was vibrant and full of support from our local community, which reflects in the malls Facebook following which has now achieved 4,307 followers.

From Little Westpackers superhero visits to HOT FM live broadcast from RocoMamas and massive opening specials from our local brands the mall was alive with activity and a sense of excitement that was evident in both shoppers and tenants. The mall continues to excite and give back to our community with R120 000 in giveaways over the month of June cementing both Kwena Square and its tenants in our shopper’s minds, with a successful first day of the competition resulting in two hundred entries, Kwena Square is set for continued success long after this notable opening of events
