The Drama for Life Mvuso School and Community Education Project brings together a group of practicing artists mainly from Soweto and school educators from selected schools in Soweto to receive a one week intensive short course training in applied theatre and drama methodologies with Drama for Life at Wits University.

This training culminates into the creation of a platform for young adolescents to share and witness narratives around contemporary social issues.

In its fourth year the project is extending, with the introduction of an advanced level training in Applied Drama and Theatre methodologies for adolescent education. The advanced training will bring together teachers and community artists who have completed the introductory training, to deepen the understanding of the methodologies and become mentors to the first level trainees

“The Drama for Life Mvuso project is one of our flagship projects and has been successful in fostering collaboration between teachers and community artists in the face of extraordinary psychosocial challenges,” says Mvuso project director Tamara Gordon-Roberts.

“Over the past three years we have trained over 70 teachers and community artists who have collectively worked with hundreds of adolescents. We have seen adolescents grow in confidence by being given the opportunity to voice their opinion whilst working alongside their peers and facilitators in dynamic, negotiated and transformative ways. The project has received a Service Excellence award from the Gauteng Department of Education. We are very proud of Mvuso and believe in its potential to continue to grow,” adds Gordon-Roberts.

The project opening takes place on Monday, 6 July at the Goethe Institute in Johannesburg from 09:00 to 11:00.
