True Education being sidelined for a narrowminded education

Submitted by: Zolisa

The humanities face an uncertain future as government and business are putting pressure on universities to limit the intake of the students of the humanities. Both the government and business are cutting their sponsorship for students in humanities.

No one denies the importance of skills derived by studying science and technology, and that they are critical for job creation and thus a prosperous economy.
It is however neither necessary or logical to allow the humanities to be denigrated, in the long run education in humanities is as important as education in science and technology.
The humanities are uniquely equipped to foster broad horizons,a critical mind, wisdom, good communication skills written and verbal and above all they build a spirit of tolerance which is necessary in nation building.

Products of vocational schools tend to be good in applying what they have been taught, but they tend to lack the generic and communication skills that are required by employers, they tend to become programmed robots who do not think critically.

Humanities graduates distinguish themselves in the world with their generally broad outlook and understanding of the world around them, for instance a humanities graduate will know the culture and history of a country he has never set foot in, and when he visits that country its like he is putting theory into practise and is more likely to make friends and build business partnerships based on his knowledge and history of that particular country.

Humanities graduates have a good grasp of the langauge of commerce -: English , that is used daily by big business and government to make important decisions that affect the lives of people globally.

Humanities graduates have good presentation skills that are the lifeline of getting new business or getting new investors.
The world must not make a mistake of thinking that it can do away with the humanities, doing that will be like shooting our selves in the foot. Getting rid of the humanities is like getting rid of your memory and language and how can you function without these two important elements of your life. Humanities are the custodian of human history, his achievements and flaws, his relationship with his God, his reason for existing, they are the spirit of mankind and we still custodians of our culture and customs. The world still needs its poets, historians, philosophers, political scientits, archeologists, and anthropologists.

If we were to abandon the humanities we risk repeating the mistakes of our fore fathers that led to untold human suffering and strife, we risk loosing our great won liberties, because I assure you if we abandon the humanities now,in a 100 years time we will be robots who do not question and challenge the status quo, we will be brainwashed robots and oppressed by the few who know the value of the humanities. The world still needs its revolutionaries who challenge governments and big business, science and technology cannot produce revolutionaries who challenge the status quo.

We cannot cruise through life as robots who are only good at producing materials and chase after the dollar, there  is more to life than that, we also have spirit to consider.
Science and technology cannot teach us to better beings nor can they lead us in times of human strife.
Human freedon is not an object of science, within the purview of science, there is no such thing as liberty.
