FNB'S GISELLE OPENS AUGUST 29 2009 AT THE JOBURG THEATRE

Submitted by: Samantha
{pp}The South African Ballet Theatre will be presenting the romantic two act ballet Giselle from August 28 to September 20 2009. The season, proudly sponsored by FNB, will take place on the Mandela stage of the Joburg Theatre in Braamfontein.

Giselle is the ultimate ballet love-story with a love-triangle of an innocent peasant girl, a cheating, double-dealing yet repentant aristocrat and a huntsman driven by rejection and jealousy. Produced by The South African Ballet Theatre’s Artistic Team, the season will be accompanied by The Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Allan Stephenson (except for the selected performances listed below).

This, the greatest of ballet’s romantic classics offers dancers portraying the title role the ultimate challenge; a technically demanding yet powerfully dramatic role which captures the mystery and magic of ballet at its most ethereal. The Company’s leading dancers will perform the lead roles with several debut casts appearing for the first time. Mr Sergey Kheylik (USA) and Mr Junor de Oliveira Souza (English National Ballet, UK) will be appearing in the lead role of Albrecht as guest artists for this season, Mr de Oliveira Souza’s guest appearance is a result of Ms Maina Gielgud’s visit to SABT in February of this year. Mr Kheylik is the 2000 winner of the Prize of Hope at the Prix de Lausanne as well as the recipient of the Gold Medal at the prestigious Vienna International Ballet Competition held in Bulgaria in 2002. He is currently guest Principal artist with the Los Angeles Ballet, Odyssey Dance Theatre and the Festival Ballet Theatre.

Boosting the male ranks are the three newest members of The SABT: Mr Hyun Kyung Cho from Korea, Mr Roberto Curti from Italy and Mr Tendo Perreira dos Santos from Brazil who join The SABT permanently. All three gentlemen will be appearing in Giselle.
