Suspect caught in high speed chase

Submitted by: Jacqui

Fidelity ADT Licence Plate Recognition (LPR) cameras picked up the plates of a suspicious car earlier today in Wierdapark.

The suspect was attempting to break into a residential property at the time. Realising he had been picked up by security, he sped off and a high speed chase ensued between a number of local security providers in the area including Fidelity ADT. According to Leon Muller, District manager for Fidelity ADT, members followed the vehicle onto Hendrik Verwoerd where the suspect eventually crashed his vehicle on the corner of Old Johannesburg Road and Hendrik Verwoerd. All three suspects in the vehicle were apprehended and arrested and the vehicle was also positively linked to a criminal case in Silverton.

A big thank you to the Fidelity ADT teams, all security companies and the SAPS who all collaborated to make this arrest possible.

“LPR cameras are an excellent crime deterrent. There are a number of benefits for both the community and security providers as the LPR cameras are linked to a national data base of suspicious or stolen vehicles. The system is monitored 24-hours a day and the presence of the cameras themselves act as a good deterrent to criminals. Should a confirmed suspicious vehicle be found and stopped in a suburb, the occupants will be questioned and, if no evidence is found, monitored closely until the vehicle leaves the suburb. It is a sobering wake-up call for criminals who don’t even realise they’ve been captured on the LPR system. In this incident there was evidence of their involvement in car jamming and theft,” says Muller.

“Criminals are becoming more and more sophisticated and so we need to be ahead of them every step of the way,” he concludes.
