Lockdown opens the door for Virtual Career Day for law firms

Submitted by: Marc Ashton

The war for talent in South Africa has been disrupted by the COVID19 lockdown on university campuses, but top law firms can still showcase themselves as employers of choice through a first-of-its-kind Virtual Career Day coming up on 27 May 2020.

Conceptualised by entrepreneurs Tiaan van der Spuy (Leaply) and Peter Morgan (Schooladvisor.co.za), the event will provide graduates with a chance to interact with recruiters from some of the top law firms in the country.  “The lockdown means that traditional career days are off the schedule for the moment, but leading firms are still in a battle to attract the top talent and they need to be out there and visible” says van de Spuy.

Pointing to recruitment data on the Leaply platform which is home to over 160 000 graduates, van der Spuy says that recruiters have not cut back on their searches for high quality graduates saying: “Our technology is used by some of the top legal and finance firms across the country and search volumes have remained robust during this lockdown period.”

“Until a few months ago, education institutions used to throw around buzzwords like ‘e-learning’ and ‘digital classrooms’ but until April rolled around, very few of them actually understood what these terms meant,” says Morgan who spends much of his time helping the education sector develop digital offerings.

This upcoming Virtual Career Day serves as a perfect example of how the right digital technology can change how firms can engage graduates. Experienced moderators will quiz the management and recruitment teams about their company culture, areas of expertise and reasons why they should be a destination of choice for these graduates.

“We would like to think that we are democratizing career days through the smart use of technology and allowing recruiters to a broader talent pool to grow their organization,” says van Der Spuy before concluding: “We believe our format will allow for far better engagement and the opportunity to have follow-up discussions and talent tracking.”  For more information on partnering with this Virtual Career Day, please contact Tiaan van der Spuy (This email address is being protected from spambots.
