Silverstar and Hot Cares change two youngsters lives

Young Nikita Reeves (23) and her brother Ethan (13) were facing an uncertain future by the end of 2018, with no parental support, extensive study and school fees, totally unfurnished accommodation, and general looming living expenses, when their story reached Hot 91.9fm’s Hot Cares Christmas Wishlist, and through that, to long-time supporter Silverstar Casino (https://www.tsogosun.com/silverstar-casino) .

Their lives are different now. They have a fully furnished apartment, Ethan’s school fees have been paid, Nikita’s fees for her third year at IMM Graduate School marketing degree have been paid, and they have R1,500 monthly grocery vouchers for the year.

The youngsters had been abandoned by their parents and circumstances had changed to the point where Nikita was taking on the responsibility of looking after her brother. “…he's my brother and has no one else. 13 is a tricky age and high school is an important time in his life. I will need to set an example for him and be extremely responsible,” she wrote when a friend proposed approaching the Hot Cares Christmas Wish List.

Hot Cares reached out to Silverstar’s CSI team, who were impressed and moved by the strength of character and tenacity shown by Nikita. Adele Wilson, Silverstar’s CSI Manager, says, “Our involvement and contributions will hopefully give both Nikita and Ethan the opportunity to start living their purpose and their lives by solving a series of real-life problems they faced.”

Silverstar went on a wild shopping spree for furniture and household items for the apartment, which included beds and lounge furniture, desks, chairs, table, TV, entertainment centre, washing machine, fridge freezer, kitchen appliances, curtains, linen, crockery and cutlery, cleaning equipment, and much more, while other items including a bookshelf, dressing table, and curtains were donated by the team. Move It Day happened on 1 February with much excitement, enthusiasm, and all hands on deck by the Silverstar and Hot Cares teams and Nikita and Ethan.

Wilson adds, “Nikita and Ethan were facing a lot of burden in their young lives, and it was wonderful to be able to work together with Hot FM to make a real difference in their lives and see them start the year in a happy space. We have no doubt that they have what it takes to achieve a bright future – and we look forward to seeing that happen. Our hope for them is that they grab this opportunity with both hands, and pay it forward by showing kindness to others who are also battling.”
