The DA-led City of Johannesburg has discovered that contractors and sub-contractors have been working together to rob the people of Joburg of power cables and other infrastructure goods. This is not only theft of public goods but an attack on service delivery as well.

In its fight against corruption, the City recently raided a stash of stolen infrastructure worth R80 billion. These goods were stolen from City Power before being stashed at a private residence and consisted of overhead lines, street lights, fuses, circuit breaks and street poles.

The DA welcomes the arrests that have since been made and that these corrupt contractors will be held to book. We are encouraged that action is being taken by Mayor Herman Mashaba in dealing with the scourge.

Furthermore, the City has reportedly lost R30 million worth of cables last year alone. This is a clear indication of a systemic problem, which was left by the ANC.

As it stands, the City is in debt because the former ANC-administration had built a corrupt system of dodgy deals that left the City in a dire financial situation. As a result, the City has only R10 billion with which to address a R170 billion backlog. Despite this immense challenge, the DA-led administration is doing all it can to ensure that the people of Joburg get the services that they deserve.

In the new budget cycle, the Mayor will ensure that more investment goes towards city infrastructure and the ongoing fight against corruption. This will enable the DA-led administration to ensure that the people receive the services that they deserve.

Mayor Mashaba is determined to bring about real change, this means an end to ANC corruption and a new beginning for the people of Joburg.
