RSAWEB supports The Gary Kirsten Foundation this Mandela Day

Gary Kirsten, and the Gary Kirsten Foundation (GKF), is building a Township Cricket Centre of Excellence at Chris Hani Secondary School in Khayelitsha. This will include an indoor training centre and full-size artificial field, allowing the GKF to create a truly world-class hub for Township cricket in the region.

The new infrastructure will help to unlock the untapped potential of young cricketers in the area with Gary Kirsten stating: “Historically, Township schools like Chris Hani Secondary in Khayelitsha have not been able to compete against mainstream schools as they have limited sporting infrastructure.”

Since 2015 RSAWEB has been connecting classrooms, and now sports fields, to the rest of the world with free Internet connectivity. We believe that every child has the right to Internet access and have been working closely with some of our fibre providers to make this a reality. Through this initiative we’ve opened a world of possibilities for five schools who were sorely lacking resources, providing them with the tools they need to offer computer classes, do research and improve their admin systems with online tools.

RSAWEB will be extending its free connectivity initiative and support the GKF by providing the Township Cricket Centre of Excellence with internet connectivity for all the GKF staff and coaches so that they can continue their great work without stressing about slow, unreliable and expensive connectivity. This is just another way that RSAWEB is “connecting tomorrow”.

This is just the beginning of an exciting partnership for both RSAWEB and GKF as Gary Kirsten says: “It is an ambitious project, and a very expensive one, and it would be impossible without the right partners. Connectivity will be important as we will be running Township Coach Development sessions at the Centre and our coaches and players need access to online coaching and life skills content to improve their skills. Huge thanks to RSAWEB to coming on board for this project and we look forward to working with them further in growing this partnership!”

Mandela Day, 18 July 2019, is the perfect day to officially mark the beginning of this exciting journey. The GKF together with RSAWEB, the school, coaches, players, media and other sponsors will be launching this project.

On the day, RSAWEB will be spending 67 minutes at Chris Hani Secondary School; joining the kids in sporting, art and cultural activities. All are invited and welcome to join us on Mandela Day between 3-5pm at Chris Hani Secondary School, Cekeca Road, T3-V3, XP34+79 Khayelitsha, Cape Town, 7784.

For the month of July, RSAWEB is also doing a collection drive and asking all our staff, customers, suppliers and partners to provide the following items (preferably new):

  • Tennis balls
  • Slazenger soft cricket balls
  • Soccer balls
  • Any other sporting equipment

You can drop off these items at either our Cape Town office at Suite 401, The Point building, 76 Regent Road Sea Point or our Johannesburg office at Block B1, The Crescent East, 3 Eglin Road, Sunninghill.

All items collected will be packaged and delivered to Chris Hani Secondary School the following month.

Please show your support and help us collect these items. Remember to like and follow RSAWEB on social media to see us at the Mandela Day event.

About the Gary Kirsten Foundation
The focus of the Gary Kirsten Foundation, through Gary Kirsten Cricket, is on the creation of sporting ecosystems and healthy alternatives for township communities by providing quality infrastructure that is safe and accessible to people in the townships. South Africa has a rich sporting culture and has produced many great cricketers, however, there is a lack of Black African cricketers being represented in the South African domestic, first-class and international cricket structures. The aim of these cricket and coaching development initiatives it to ensure that they will produce results, are sustainable and enrich the lives of the community. Cricket clubs and schools located within township areas are central to
the success of aspiring youngsters who wish to become professional cricketers. The GKF is partnering with Chris Hani High School in Khayelitsha to build an excellent indoor cricket facility. GKF is a PBO.
