(LIFE)LIKE | A selection of work by identical twins Alouette & Alvira Ferreira inspired by the social media platform Instagram.

StateoftheART is delighted to feature artists and identical twins Alvira and Alouette Ferreira on the Exhibition Wall with a selection of paintings from their body of work '(LIFE)LIKE' between 7th - 23rd of May 2015.

In '(Life)Like' Alvira and Alouette Ferreira  explore the oscillating relationship between the physical world and virtual reality, focusing specifically on the social media platform of Instagram. Their aim is to paint contemporary images that have not been captured in the medium of paint before.

They focus on internet memes as replacements for age old genres. Portraits have been replaced by selfies and still lifes have been replaced by food porn, cat photos and “what’s in my bag” photos. This project aims to circumvent the fleeting relevance of a social media image through the medium of paint. Paintings have a good track record of surviving the eons of time and provide us with valuable glimpses of the past.

To be included in their art making process visit the gallery between 11am to 5pm on Thursday 7th of May, or post a selfie to Instagram during the First Thursdays event with the hashtag #sotalifelikeselfie and win an original painting based on your photograph.

Date:
7th May 2015   Time: 11am - 5pm for live painting session
5pm - 9pm for First Thursdays and the 'selfie' competition

Venue: StateoftheART, 61 Shortmarket Street, (between Loop & Bree), Cape Town

Selected works on show until the 23rd of May and available to purchase online. For more information please visit stateoftheart-gallery.com or call Jennifer on 0724709272

About StateoftheART

StateoftheART is South Africa's first bricks and clicks gallery selling  a selection of carefully curated art by early and mid-career artists. Our virtual platform is complemented by the brick-and-mortar StateoftheART gallery in Cape Town; an intimate space in which we regularly host exhibitions and where art lovers can enjoy a dynamic selection of accessible, and affordable, contemporary art.

StateoftheART Gallery

Established in 2010 and a pioneer in the online art market in South Africa, StateoftheART re-imagines the brick-and-mortar art gallery experience for the digital age, differentiating itself through full transparency and accessibility. Our pricing structure is clear and straightforward with the majority of the proceeds from a sale being returned to the artist who created the work. Importantly, our pricing is very competitive, leaving no room to incentivise buyers with discounts. The StateoftheART Gallery Award, a not-for-profit initiative, was founded by the gallery in 2018 to promote artists who have yet to establish a profile on the contemporary South African art scene - so when you buy art from StateoftheART you’re directly supporting artists.
