Documentary About South African Police Harassment Screens at Encounters

American attorney and filmmaker Isy India Geronimo experienced first hand the consequences of former police chief Bheki Cele’s paramilitary approach to policing.

In inner city Johannesburg, a furtive war is being waged on South Africa’s most vulnerable. Under the cloak of darkness, hundreds of homeless, including migrants and immigrant workers, are routinely stripped of their meagre belongings, beaten and left blanket-less on the frozen streets.

The perpetrators of this harassment are a corrupt police force whose violent actions only serve to enforce the cycle of destitution. Geronimo documented these human rights abuses in her documentary film “On the Edge”, which is now screening at the Encounters Documentary Film Festival. While shooting, Geronimo found herself unlawfully arrested and charged with being an “illegal immigrant.”

This gritty film gives a voice to the voiceless and shines a light on human rights abuses happening under our very noses. The film will be screening in Johannesburg at the Nu Metro Cinemas on 18 June at 20:30 and in Cape Town at the Fugard Theatre on 21 June at 18:30.
