Hijacked vehicle recovered in Faerie Glen

Submitted by: Jacqui

Incidents of opportunistic crime are reported in several areas across Gauteng.

Just last week the Fidelity ADT team were brought in to assist with the apprehension of an attempted hijacking suspect in Kapok Street Lynnwood Glen.

According to Bennie Coetzee, Fidelity ADT Community Development Manager, they responded to a panic from the guards at Glenwood Estate on arrival they discovered that a vehicle was just Hi-jacked in front of the property and the victim, an Uber driver was still on site. On investigation, it was discovered that he was approached by two armed suspects right after he had dropped someone off. The suspects took his vehicle, a light blue Toyota corolla and fled.

Fortunately because this incident was reported and flagged, another Fidelity ADT officer responding to an alarm on Florida Keys, Faerie Glen, spotted a suspicious light blue corolla with no number plates stationed in front of a complex. Fidelity Reaction officers inspected the vehicle which was now empty and the disc of the vehicle, matched the registration of the Toyota that was just hijacked in front of Glenwood estate. Contact was made with Tracker SA and Vehicle handed over to Garsfontein SAPS.

Coetzee says unfortunately this is not an uncommon incident and warns residents to be especially vigilant. He advises:

  • Be extra alert. Switch off the car radio, do not be distracted by your cellphone and keep a lookout on your surroundings. If you have noticed any suspicious individuals do not get out of your car
  • Phone ahead of time to let friends or family know that you will be arriving soon for them to be ready to let you onto the property
  • Be aware of vehicles parked in the street with occupants inside. It might be criminals watching the area
  • Make sure that your doors are locked, and your windows are closed. Don’t have bags or cellphones visible. Make sure valuables are in your boot.
  • Always be aware and vigilant of your surroundings
  • When leaving a restaurant or shopping centre be on the lookout for anyone that could possibly be following you
  • If you believe you are being followed drive to the closest police station or security provider guard house if there is any doubt.
  • Try to keep as calm as possible and stay focused on getting to a safe place
