SA DECENT STANDARD OF LIVING REPORT UNDERWAY

Studies in Poverty and Inequality Institute, the Southern African Social Policy Research Institute and the Labour Research Service are partnering with the Minimum Income Standard (MIS) research team from Loughborough University, United Kingdom, on a pilot study to determine a baseline for a Decent Standard of Living in South Africa.

The research team will test MIS methodology in seven communities in the Eastern Cape and Western Cape across the socio-economic spectrum to determine its viability in the South African context. A similar study was recently conducted in Mexico by the MIS team, whose research was instrumental in the adoption of a national living wage for under-25s in the UK.

The findings of this report will be useful in the ongoing debate on the National Minimum Wage, which SPII identifies as one means in addressing poverty in the country. This critical report will be available later this year.

SPII is also supporting a series of nationwide consultations with community based organisations on the National Minimum Wage by CORE, The Co-operative for Research and Education.  A final report will be available next month.
