Watch the Award Winning South African Documentary ‘The African Cypher’ at Bay Harbour Market

Submitted by: Ian Dickinson

Bay Harbour Market gives visitors the opportunity to enter the complex world of South African street dance at the free screening of award-winning South African documentary The African Cypher on Thursday, 21 November.

Winner of the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the Encounters Film Festival 2012 (South Africa) and nominee for the Best African Documentary at the African Movie Academy Awards 2013, The African Cypher is a film that charts the journeys of several street dance crews in the townships of South Africa as they prepare for the Red Bull Beat Battle. What emerges from the different narrative threads is a complex and redemptive story of how urban youth in the country’s ghettos are able to transcend the harshness of their circumstances through dance.

Says director Bryan Little – “The people I met often had  horrific and frightening ‘back-stories’, but these same people didn’t live that story, they lived with passion and courage through their art form.”

In the film, Bryan makes a statement– “The stories we want to hear as a western audience do exist here – The hopelessness, drugs, violence, poverty and broken homes; but to dwell on it would be a disservice to every aching muscle and screaming heart that dances.”

The screening will take place at Bay Harbour Market on Thursday, 21 November at 7 pm. Entrance is free. Limited seats are available - seating will be on a first come first serve basis. There will be a full bar for visitors to enjoy a sundowner while watching the movie.
