Submitted by: Ian Dickinson

HOUT BAY, WESTERN CAPE, SOUTH AFRICA, 12 MARCH 2013: It’s all about jazz at the Bay Harbour Market this weekend with The Time Flies, Sven Blumer, and jazz icons Errol Dyers and George Werner.

Taking to the stage for Friday Nite Live! on March 15th is 5-piece eclectic jazz outfit The Time Flies. This unique band describes their sound as Afro-country-skunk-funk and is influenced by everything from Vusi Mahlasela and Brenda Fassie to Elvis Costello and the Violent Femmes. With band interests listed as “beer, brandy, singing and shouting, family dysfunctions, believing and doubting”, you know you’re in for a pretty exciting performance. Check them out at Bay Harbour Market where they’ll “play real live while feeding off audience juices”.

The Bay Harbour Sound Stage comes alive on Saturday March 16th with accomplished multi-instrumental vocalist, Sven Blumer. Sven has been active in the music industry for many years, performing live and doing session work as a guitarist as well as tutoring aspiring musos. He draws on his love of cultural diversity and varied genres of music, which is highly influenced by the different countries in which he grew up. Sven’s music is rooted in blues and rock, with folk and jazz sensibilities.

Ending the weekend off on Sunday March 17th are SA jazz giants Errol Dyers and George Werner. Band leader, music educator, pianist, composer-arranger and producer George Werner is one of the most recognised and respected figures in SA jazz. He has performed and recorded with the likes of Winston Mankunku, Robbie Jansen, Duke and Ezra Ncqukana, and Errol and Alvin Dyers. Internationally he has performed in Germany, Japan, Bahrain and Brazil.

As an established teacher in grassroots music education in South Africa, George has harnessed young music talent for institutions and groups such as MIAGI, Artscape, the National Youth Jazz Festival, TOMECY, COMART, schools such as Alexander Sinton, South Peninsula and Christel House, and the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation (IJR). He is the recipient of the 2012 SA Association for Jazz Education (SAJE) Distinguished Teacher Award.

George will be joined on stage by renowned guitarist Errol Dyers. Unlike many of his contemporaries Errol has not had the good fortune of studying music, but instead learnt his music on the street, drawing inspiration from the natural rhythms of both Cape Town and the people of the mother city, allowing people to interpret themselves through the music. "More than anything, it's Cape Town that has influenced my sound" reflects Errol.

His style can be described as Cape Jazz and Ghoema, and some of the songs on his debut album, 'Sonesta', incorporate the spirit of songs that are almost a hundred years old and stem from the earliest strummings of the Cape people that have been passed down through the generations.

As well as awesome live music, the Bay Harbour Market houses over 100 stalls featuring arts, crafts, fashion, decor and delicious cuisine.
