How Easy is Bamboo Flooring to Maintain?

Bamboo flooring is an attractive, natural flooring material that adds value to your home and has its benefits and drawbacks like any other hardwood flooring option.

What is Bamboo Flooring?

Here is an interesting fact. Did you know that bamboo is classified as grass and not a tree? Traditionally grown in China, it is cut into strips, dried, and then machined into flooring planks. Due to its nature, bamboo flooring is a highly stable type of flooring that can be floated over underfloor heating, underlays or installed in areas that experience significant temperature fluctuations.

Is Bamboo Flooring Available in Different Colours?

Besides various stained bamboo colour options, bamboo can also be provided in its natural colour, namely blonde. In addition, it can also be carbonised during production. This is a process whereby carbon is added to the dye throughout the bamboo rather than simply staining the surface. Besides providing a range of colours from tan to light brown, the carbonising process also makes the flooring softer by decreasing its strength.

  • The Benefits of Bamboo Flooring
  • Renewable, eco-friendly material
  • Easy maintenance
  • It can be refinished, depending on the plank thickness
  • The contemporary look adds real estate value
  • DIY-friendly

The Drawbacks of Bamboo Flooring

  • Inexpensive options are easily scratched
  • Excessive exposure to humidity may cause damage

How Is Bamboo Flooring Maintained?

Bamboo is relatively easy to maintain. A daily sweep with a soft-bristled brush will remove the build-up of dust and dirt that could damage or dull the flooring. A PH neutral wood-floor cleaning spray and soft mop should be used weekly to maintain shine and cleanliness. Never use a steam mop, as the steam can cause the bamboo planks to warp.

Should a spill occur, it is recommended that you wipe it away quickly with an absorbent cloth to prevent the liquid from soaking into the flooring and causing damage.

Some objects and heavier furniture can scratch or even dent bamboo flooring. It is advisable to place felt pads underneath the objects or furniture to prevent damage. Always try to pick up the furniture, move it and then place it down again, instead of dragging it across the bamboo flooring – which may cause damage. As bamboo flooring is susceptible to scratches, consider placing doormats at each entrance door to trap any dirt or moisture brought in from outside.
