Sounds of Africa at Joburg Tourism's 10th TOPS at SPAR Soweto Wine and Lifestyle Festival

The sounds of Africa are coming to the 10th TOPS at SPAR Soweto Wine and Lifestyle Festival, presented by Joburg Tourism, with renowned Pan-African musicians, Della Tamin, Mbollo and Romeo Mputu, taking to the stage at the festival’s Gauteng Tourism’s Taste of Africa Dining Experience.

Kicking off the 10 year celebrations on Thursday, 4 September, is Cameroonian guitarist and composer Della Tamin with his Afro Jazz style. ‘Discovered’ by Robert Trunz from MELT 2000, Della was introduced to artists such as Liane Cox, Mabi Thobejane, Pops Mohamed, Chris Lewis and the late Moses Khumalo, who have had a profound influence on his music. Della’s music and songs are composed in his home language Medumba as well as Doula, French and English. Today Della performs nationwide and fans can catch him playing on a regular weekly basis at Moyo Melrose Arch and Moyo Zoo Lake in Johannesburg.

On Friday Senegalese reggae band Mbollo will be bringing their unique fusion of Senegalese and French music styles to the stage. Their blend of reggae, dancehall, Afro-Jazz, Hip Hop and Salsa is expressed in their French, English and Wolof lyrics. The band is headed by El-Hadji Ngari Ndong, master percussionist from Dakar, Senegal. El-Hadji has performed with artists such as Eddie Grant, Hugh Masikela, Simphiwe Dana, Zama Jobe, Victor Ntoni, Sutukazi Arosi, Youssou Ndour, Moh Dediouf and Jonas Gwangwa.

On Saturday, visitors can sip and savour wine to the tunes of Congo Kinshasa-born Romeo Mputu. Known as Romeo M, the Johannesburg-based musician is a rising star with performances that critics describe as ‘simply heart stopping.’ Romeo M’s music is infused with soukouss, Afro-jazz and Zouk beats. The Congolese star’s single Good Morning Africa, released late last year, has been well-received by fans and has been making waves on MTV Base.

Presented by Joburg Tourism, the 10th TOPS at SPAR Soweto Wine and Lifestyle Festival takes place from 4 to 6 September at the UJ, Soweto Campus. The Gauteng ‘Taste of Africa Dining Experience’ will feature the top restaurants from Soweto and the Maboneng Precinct, including House of Baobab, The Blackanese and Roots Restaurant & Gallery.
