Grande Provence Hosts The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Gala Dinner

Submitted by: The P.R Team

Grande Provence Heritage Wine Estate in Franschhoek, part of Huka Retreats, recently played host to Their Royal Highnesses, The Earl and Countess of Wessex, at an elegant Gala Dinner. Staying at the multi-award winning, The Owner’s Cottage, this was the third visit by the Royal couple to the Estate.

The Earl and Countess were visiting South Africa as part of the 30th Anniversary celebrations of the President’s Award for Youth Empowerment. The President’s Award comes under the umbrella of The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, a youth development programme founded over 50 years ago by the Earl’s father, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.  Earlier in the day Prince Edward presented Gold Awards and met African Business Leaders.

The Gala Dinner was attended by international dignitaries and business leaders who are already generous supporters of the International Award and the President’s Award.  The 30th anniversary also provided an opportunity to introduce South African business leaders and philanthropists to the work of Award programme locally.

In South Africa, the success rate of the President’s Award speaks for itself. The number of participating units in schools, prisons and community groups has increased exponentially.  Officials in correctional facilities say that the re-offending rate amongst juvenile offenders who have completed their Award is miniscule.

“The Award allows young people the opportunity, often for the first time in their lives, to have a feeling of accomplishment; and to develop skills, confidence and self-esteem, often in the face of extraordinary challenges,” said host Alex van Heeren.

HRH Prince Edward comments: “Franschhoek is truly one of the most beautiful villages in Southern Africa.”
