October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Submitted by: AlterSage
{pp}October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month in South Africa and Interflora South Africa will be donating up to R10 for every mixed pink bunch of flowers ordered through Interflora in support of this cause.

Breast Cancer Awareness began in the autumn of 1991 in the United States when participants of the New York Marathon were handed pink ribbons to show support for breast cancer survivors. The symbol has remained and has become synonymous with breast cancer charities and campaigns.

The number of cases of breast cancer in South Africa has risen and this is now the most common form of cancer in the country. One in seven women will contract this insidious disease within their lifetime. There is no cure, only treatments which may stop the illness and send it into remission. Any support or donations to the charity as well as the continued spread of awareness about breast cancer is hopefully taking scientists closer to a cure.

“With the up and coming month of breast cancer awareness in October, we want to ensure that we make a contribution to the efforts to help those affected by breast cancer” says Sharon Louw, CEO of Interflora South Africa. “By donating five to ten Rand when a mixed pink bouquet is ordered means that we can raise awareness amongst our customers about the illness and allow them to support the fight against cancer.”

If detected early, breast cancer can be treated and there is a higher survival rate (90%) than when diagnosis is left too late. This illustrates the importance of educating South African women about the illness, especially performing regular self-examinations, having regular mammograms and being informed about detection and treatment options.

Breast Cancer Awareness is a worldwide campaign and Breast Cancer Awareness Month in South Africa aims at raising awareness of the disease across all cultures, classes and races.

“Interflora South Africa is proud of being a small part of the fight against cancer” says Louw. “Working together, South Africans can all assist in raising awareness, even if it is through a small gesture. Interflora’s mixed pink bouquet affords our customers the chance to contribute to this worthy cause.”
