{pp}The KwaZulu Natal Association of Flower Arrangers will be hosting their much loved and very popular annual flower arranging competition and show at Le Domaine over the weekend of the 6th and 7th September 2008.

Entitled ‘Springtime at Le Domaine’, the competition is open to members of the various associate clubs, namely Hillcrest, St Anne’s, Eshowe, South Coast, Pietermaritzburg and Districts, Port Shepstone, Richards Bay, Umdoni, Umfolozi and Umhlahli. Entries have been called for in 3 categories and the first of these is ‘Nature’s Beauty’, a mass design category, which is to be staged on the floor.

The ‘Gala Banquet’ section is a table design, which is to be staged on the full length table covered in dark cream and dressed with crockery, glassware and cutlery – these tables will be used as part of the décor for the Le Domaine Spring Ball on the evening of Friday, 5th September 2008. The final category is entitled a ‘Cascade of Colour’ and is a cocktail table based design.

All categories are unrestricted in terms of height and materials to be used. The entries to this competition are to be judged by members of the KZN Panel of Floral Art Judges and all are accredited by the South African Flower Union or SAFU. The guidelines for the judging of the competition are in line with the 4th edition of the Judges & Competitors’ Handbook as disseminated by SAFU and the judging criteria for ‘Springtime at Le Domaine’ are to be design, interpretation, presentation, distinction and originality. The judges for this year’s show include Althea Hingham, the current President of SAFU, as well as Shirley Gillitt who is currently serving as the union’s Secretary. Both judges have competed successfully in South Africa and abroad and they will be bringing their keen and discerning eyes to the judging of the entries for the competition. Hingham and Gillitt are to be joined by Maureen Francois, an avid and very successful competitor who received 2 awards in the Pavilion Shopping Centre Flower Show last week, as well as Linda Larratt.

Larratt is one of the newest judges on the panel but she boasts an impressive list of accolades, including a 1st prize at ‘Design 2007’ in Ireland last year. She was also part of the award winning South African exhibit team at the Chelsea Garden Show earlier this year. The judging team will be rounded off with the exceptional talents of Helen Bellew, a Le Domaine resident and veritable doyenne of flower arranging within KwaZulu Natal. Bellew won a First and a Special Award at the World Association of Flower Arrangers (WAFA) show that was held in Japan in 2005 and she was invited as a guest demonstrator to represent SA at the World Show in Pakistan in March 2008, a great honour as only 5 international demonstrators are selected to participate in the show. Bellew is to be joined by fellow enthusiast and equally highly respected arranger, Barbara Bamber.

Bamber was introduced to the ‘floral arts’ at a very young age by her mother, the late Nancy Lee who served as a past President of the Durban Floral Art Club. Bamber joined the DFAC in 1981 and competed in her first show in 1982. She has since competed in 5 WAFA World Shows and has been awarded a ‘top 3 place’ 3 times. She has won the 1st prize in ‘Floriade’ in Holland, in 1992 and again in 2002 and she has been on the KZN Association of Flower Arrangers’ judges’ panel since 1997.

Last year’s flower show at Le Domaine was a riotous splash of colour throughout the clubhouse and was enjoyed by both residents and visitors to the development alike. This year, the blossom and foliage creations of the artists of the KZN Association of Flower Arrangers are sure to be as spectacular and awe inspiring as in previous years.

The public is invited to visit Club de Vie at Le Domaine on Saturday, the 6th of September and Sunday, the 7th September 2008, to view the designs and see the results of the judging of the competition. Entrance is free. For more information on the competition or the association, please contact Barbara Bamber on 031 767 5116 or Helen Bellew on 031 716 8228.
