Breathing New Life Into Bez Valley

Submitted by: Michael Butler

JOHANNESBURG, 20 August 2018 - One of the greatest epochs in human history, the Renaissance, was born out of a dark age in human history, where demographic, cultural, and economic deterioration ruled. All it took to thrust humanity out of this grave period was a spark of brilliance that set the world back on the path to prosperity and enlightenment.

Small sparks can set off powerful reactions, and a small flicker of light in the heart of Johannesburg has begun to set off a chain reaction that many believe could herald the renaissance that transforms Johannesburg into a true first-world city.

The transformation of Maboneng, from what some would consider a de facto no-go zone in the early 90’s, to vibrant and diverse inner city hub has inspired people from across the globe to look at Johannesburg’s CBD in a new light. Forbes recently placed Maboneng amongst the 12 coolest neighbourhoods in the world, and that is only the start of it.

Following the success of Maboneng, other old, and some would say forgotten, suburbs skirting the inner city have begun to witness the birth of their own renaissances. Victoria Yards, a formerly derelict industrial zone in the heart of Johannesburg’s neglected Bezuidenhout Valley has blossomed into a collective space occupied by artisans, including a metalworker, a silk screener, a glass smelter, a craft beer brewer and a bespoke designer, and now the very same suburb is getting ready to welcome a world class hotel the likes of which downtown Johannesburg hasn’t seen in over three decades.

Bez Valley as most call it, is situated North East of the city centre, nestled between Parktown to the west, and Bedfordview to the east, making it a prime location for those looking to explore all the sights, sounds and flavours Johannesburg has to offer.

General Manager of the Garden Top Hotel, Alby Bester, believes that the opening of the new hotel is exactly what the area needs to bring prosperity and a bit of pizazz back to the area. “The owner, Samuel Okoye has played an important role in the upliftment of Bez Valley over the years, and has utilised his extensive experience in the hospitality industry to re-energise this illustrious suburb,” he said.

The hotel - situated on Albertina Sisulu Road - can’t be missed and dominates its humble surroundings with modern flair, featuring 28 stylishly appointed rooms, a large swimming pool, and a balcony area that provides stunning views of the city. The Garden Top Hotel aims to snatch up business executives and adventure seekers looking for a base close to Johannesburg CBD.

“We are located less than 20 minutes from O.R Tambo airport, and in close proximity to the East Gate shopping centre and the cultural melting pot of Maboneng,” Added Bester.
