Showcasing The  Dignity Of People
"Living Outside"

German photographer, Frank Schönau, uses his lens to capture Cape Town’s otherwise invisible community, those we look at daily but do not see. His portraits reveal with dignity, the depth, vulnerability, and resilience of those who willingly or unwillingly live on the outside.

Standing in stark contrast to the beauty of Cape Town is the social segregation and poverty that is visible everywhere. Through cooperation with the local NGO "Bread for Life", I got involved in their weekly soup kitchen that provides free food for the homeless. As I met and got to know some of the people, the idea for the project "Living Outside" was born; a collaborative art project that combines photographs of people who live on the streets with interviews about their dreams, hopes, and lives. We want to give these people a voice.
