Stars Shine Brightly at the 5th Annual White Star Celebrity Cook-Off

Culinary skills were on full display as some of South Africa’s most popular faces showed off and cooked up a storm at this year’s White Star’s Celebrity Cook-Off. The event took place at The Ridge Casino in Witbank on the 17th September 2016. The fifth edition of this popular cook-off challenge served up a day of appetising dishes as a mix of diverse personalities competed for this year’s title. As always, there can only be one winner, and Vusi Kunene and his Team were crowned winners of White Star Celebrity Cook-Off 2016.

White Star handpicked celebrities who have a keen interest and love for food, and paired them in teams. These teams were then challenged to cook creative, delicious starters and main meals within a time frame of two hours using only a mystery basket of ingredients, along with South Africa’s favourite maize meal, White Star.

Amongst the competing celebrities were:

· Akhumzi Jezile

· Andile Galeshewe

· Linda Sebezo

· Zweli Dube

· Zola Hashatsi

Last year’s winning team, Nolly Meje from Isidingo, Mablerh, Thato Molamu from Greed and Desire and Vusi Kunene from Generations were also present at this year’s cook-off to defend their title and bagged it two years in a row.

“Every year we strive to make the annual White Star Celebrity Cook-Off a success, and this year was no different. Inviting the chosen celebs, along with a host of White Star’s media friends, ensured that we once again hosted a spectacular and memorable event. The Michelin Stars once again captivated us with both their starter and mail dishes – their prize is indeed well-deserved. All in all, this year’s event was a unique experience for our fans, the media and celebrities alike,” says White Star Marketing Manager, Mokhele Makhothi.

The event MC and comedian, Skhumba who had everyone in stiches with his funny jokes, announced the winning team after judges, Siphokazi Mdlankomo, Doreen Molefe and chef Dagnay grappled with the difficult decision of choosing the best dishes. The Radio veteran Bob Mabena kept the crowd dancing with some classic kwaito and house beats.

Judge Siphokazi Mdlankomo says, “On the day of the cook-off, our celebrity participants were assigned to five groups, and each group had to prepare a two-course meal using White Star Quick to create dishes that best demonstrate the versatility and  fast-cooking properties of the product. The other judges and I were definitely impressed with The Michelin Stars starter and main dish, as it embodied and displayed everything that we were looking for.”
