why your business needs a website

Submitted by: Cllr Rick Crouch

The most frequently asked question I get is, “My business is very small, it is just me and two employees, and our product really can't be sold online. Do I really need a website?” My answer is YES, if you have a business, you should have a website. No question.

Furthermore don't be so quick to dismiss your product or service as one that can't be sold online. Nowadays, there's very little that can't be sold over the internet. There are now more than 30 million shoppers are online, and they are purchasing everything from books to computers to cars to real estate to jet airplanes to natural gas to you name it.

Customers are no longer using the yellow pages, now days when consumers are looking for something they “Google” it. So if you do not have a website you are losing out on potential customers.

You should at the very least have a presence on the web so that customers, potential employees, business partners and even investors can quickly and easily find out more about your business and the products or services you have to offer.
A website is the professional face for your company online, an interactive brochure that your clients worldwide can browse 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days of the year.

You can advertise as much or as little on your website as you need. It is a fully dynamic brochure about your company which can be updated quickly and easily, add photos to draw your clients attention, market out your 'News' to existing and new customers for free, receive customer enquiries and orders. A website enables you to expand your reach, you can attract customers from any country in the world and with the exchange rate at its current levels it makes your products very attractive for export.

Having said that, it's not enough that you just have a website. You must have a professional-looking site if you want to be taken seriously. Since many consumers now search for information online prior to making a purchase at a brick-and-mortar store, your site may be the first chance you have at making a good impression on a potential buyer. It is better to have no website at all rather than an unprofessional one.

The internet is one of the great equalisers, it levels the playing field. As I already mentioned, you only have one shot at making a good first impression. With a well-designed site, your little operation can project the image and professionalism of a much larger company. The reverse is also true. I've seen many big company websites that were so badly designed and hard to navigate that they completely lacked professionalism and credibility.

Size does not matter when it comes to benefiting from a website. It does not matter if you're a one-man show or a corporate giant; if you don't have a website, you're losing business to other companies that do.

The one exception to that rule is that it is better to have no website rather than having one that is so unprofessional that it makes your business look bad.

Your website is an important part of your business and should be included in your marketing plan. Add your website address to brochures, business cards and all advertising.
