What is Cybersecurity?

What is Cybersecurity?

In a nutshell, cybersecurity is the protection of internet-connected systems, including hardware, software and data.

ESET's Cybersecurity for businesses provides you with protection against malware, ransomware, phishing and social engineering. It's also protection for data and networks, and prevents unauthorised users from accessing digital assets. Implementing cybersecurity strategies also improves the recovery time after a breach and the protection of end-users and their personally identifiable information.

ESET's Enterprise Cybersecurity services protect your business’ IT infrastructure and help defend it against the escalating threat of modern cyber attacks

The goal of cybersecurity is to limit risk and protect IT assets from attackers with malicious intent. Information security, which is designed to maintain the confidentiality, integrity and availability of data, is a subset of cybersecurity. Cybersecurity helps prevent data breaches, identity theft and ransomware attacks, as well as aiding in risk management.

Cybersecurity solutions should always be in place to protect the data of small and large organisations and individuals. Even though significant security breaches are the ones that often get publicised, small organisations still have to concern themselves with their security posture, as they often are the target of viruses, ransomware and phishing. One of the most problematic elements of cybersecurity is the continually evolving nature of security risks and advanced persistent threats.

Types of Cybersecurity Threats

With so many hacks and data breaches occurring in recent years, it’s easy to produce a laundry list of household name brands and organisations that have been affected. In fact, one particularly chilling statistic is that over 4 000 hacks happen every single day using ransomware
alone. It’s extremely misguided for anyone to think that their company can’t be affected. Cyberthreats can take many forms, including the following:

Malware: A combination of two words – "malicious" and "software". This umbrella term describes any form of malicious code used to harm a computer user, such as worms, computer viruses, Trojan horses and spyware.

Ransomware: A type of malware that can lock a device or encrypt its contents in order to extort money from the owner.

Social engineering: An attack that relies on human interaction and designed to deceive users into breaking security procedures to obtain personal or sensitive information that is typically protected.

Phishing: A form of social engineering attack, in which the criminal impersonates a trustworthy entity while requesting sensitive information of the victim, such as credit card or login information
