Submitted by: Sarann Buckby

Brightwater Commons is giving you a good reason to have another celebration with their Chinese New Year event, The Year of the Dragon, scheduled for Saturday 28 January 2012 from 11am to 5pm. The headline act for the day is the internationally renowned China National Acrobatics Troupe who incorporate music, dance, opera and Kung fu into their acrobatic programmes.

“We pride ourselves on hosting events that encourage the community to explore some of the diverse cultures that make up our land. Chinese New Year has attracted not just the Chinese community in the past, but many Joburg citizens who want to learn more about the culture. It is considered the longest and most important event in the Chinese calendar. This year’s festivities are going to be even better than previous years, with a host of exhibitions and stalls, a spectacular opening ceremony and breathtaking feats of the China National Acrobatics Troupe,” says Francois du Buisson, marketing manager at Brightwater Commons.

The opening ceremony is not to be missed. Beginning at 1pm, it will include a colourful display of the Dragon and Lion dancing which traditionally marks the Chinese New Year and includes many symbolic meanings. Next up, the cultural variety show will include talented traditional dancers and singers dressed up in their finery. Fan and Flower dances, martial arts displays and traditional South African dances are just some of the items visitors can look forward to.

The China National Acrobatic Troupe, established over 50 years ago with performances in more than 80 countries and regions, will round off the entertainment for the day with a gravity-defying display and daredevil acts. Visitors can make themselves comfortable on the grassy commons to enjoy the display on the stage and either bring a picnic or try the Chinese delicacies, tantalising their taste buds with the variety of food stalls present.

A Photographic Cultural Exhibition of Beijing will be on show in the Promotions Court to help bring the Far East closer to home. Those with an artistic leaning can come and learn more about Chinese arts and crafts with Paper Cutting, Clay Figure Art and Calligraphy as well as see some amazing displays. If you love to shop make sure you visit the diverse array of Chinese Art, culture and fashion stalls.
