Johannesburg, August 2021: Despite facemasks becoming the new must-have accessory during the pandemic, make-up has remained resilient, and new trends continue to emerge despite most people not showing their full faces to the world. Cuan Kemp, National Head of Marketing & Social Media, National Head of Education and National Head of Make-up for professional make-up brand Kryolan SA, shares some of the summer trends that are likely to show face in 2021.

Let’s begin with skin!

“Our canvases that allow us to create our looks of choice – our skins - are emerging from the dry winter and are in need of some TLC,” says Cuan. He continues, “It’s time to seriously break out the sunblock and protect ourselves from the harsh South African sun.

“Subtle make-up application is going to be a big trend this year. The biggest reason for that is it’s comfortable and because it accommodates facemasks well.

“Nude tones bring out our natural colouring and highlights our features, and globally, natural beauty is becoming a confident trend. It’s not about camouflaging imperfections anymore, but rather to draw more focus to a naturally radiant complexion”.

Cuan shares a few topical skin tips for summer 2021:

  • Ditch the heavy foundation and let yourself breathe
In the hot, humid summer months, your skin needs to come up for air so that it can look as natural and fresh as possible. Plus, a beauty routine that’s quick and easy is appreciated by busy women everywhere. A sheer, self-setting foundation, such as Kryolan’s Digital Complexion Fluid, is the perfect option for a natural, light-weight and radiant skin application, offering you a beautifully flawless finish, perfect for this season!

  • Mattify your cover
Summer is the perfect time to lighten up your layers. A primer gives you all the anti-shine, pore-blurring benefits of a powder, without looking or feeling like one.

  • Non-touring, not contouring
Try not to over contour. If you opt for a subtle, soft alternative, your features will glow through more. Here, subtle highlighting and a light wash of bronzer applied just below your cheekbone will do the trick.

Eyes, eyes baby

The eyes are the windows to everything when you’re under a mask, including your smile and your general demeanour. Cuan adds, “Eyelash extensions give much more volume than traditional mascara and they go with every look (provided you don’t overdo it), however Kryolan has just launched 4 new mascaras that are making waves for their impact on the eyelashes! This year, colourful lashes are taking it up a notch. And it’s totally DIY. Mix a drop of a mixing medium with some powdered eyeshadow and apply to the eyelashes for a pop of colour.

“For a 90s grunge look, a blurred contour works wonders. Use a pencil and a short-haired brush at the base of the lashes, or for a more subtle Egyptian look, gently extend the line towards the temples and the base of the nose. Drawing one or more graphic curves with liquid eyeliner is great for those doe eyes, and you can pair with false lashes for dramatic effect.

“Bold colours are big on the eyes this summer, bringing a boost of positive energy. Whether flamboyant orange and purple or a daring multi-coloured look is your vibe, nothing should hold you back from embracing your individuality”.

Cuan concludes, “Make-up is all about personal preference and style. Whether you favour it heavy or light, there will always be a trend for whichever one you prefer. 2021 make-up trends are all about innovation and individuality, so every make-up lover is sure to find something that’s exactly their flavour.”
