Not-So-Secret Desires Confirmed: Désir Prepares For SA Sex Toy Boom

The latest industry stats reveal SA’s drastically reformed attitudes to buying sex toys online.

Cape Town, South Africa: Brodie Meyer, Managing Director of Désir - a leading online adult store in South Africa - offers insight on the recent study released by Statistic Brain which cites South Africa as the third highest country in the world for total global Google searches on sex toys. Turns out, South Africans prefer to buy their intimate collections in secret online, and demand is growing.

“Sex toys have always been a taboo topic,” said Meyer from Désir’s Camps Bay headquarters, “but the results of the study were extremely encouraging. Back in 2012 when we were conducting our own market analyses on growing online niches, the adult toy market was subtly picking up. We saw a demand for luxury items and open communication, and founded Désir. Placing third, behind huge markets like the US and UK, shows how much progress has been made in allowing locals access to toys and the freedom to sexually express themselves in privacy and safety.”

The industry statistics released by the Research Institute clearly show South Africa with a 75 volume index, ahead of countries like Canada (72), New Zealand (71) and Australia (69). The study goes on to say that the global sex toy industry is worth roughly R240 billion, and is growing steadily by 30% each year. Much of that rapid expansion has been due to the rise of online storefronts.

“As people realize that buying sex toys online is easy, fast and discreet – more are choosing to try these toys, build collections and explore their sexuality with their partners,” says Meyer. “One of the main concerns that we have had to overcome since launching, is the lack of quality educational material on items that many consider to be part of a ‘smut-only’ industry, which is not the case at all. I believe that as we continue to break down stigmas, more people will feel confident enough to invest in their sexual health and in the happiness of their relationships.”

News sources have cited the rise in female empowerment and the increasing availability of couple-centric sex toys as a key reason for local growth. It seems that the verdict in is – South Africans are embracing a cleaner, safer, sex toy industry - thanks in large part to e-commerce companies that have made the process of purchasing adult toys a great experience.
